Soul legend Otis Redding is to be honoured on the 40th anniversary of his death with a new Billboard award bearing his name. Bosses at the rock industry magazine will present the inaugural Otis Redding Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music, Culture and Business at the Billboard R+B/Hip-Hop Awards in September (06). The award, presented to an artist and role model, is being launched in honour of the 40th anniversary, in 2007, of Redding's plane crash death. The singer's widow, ZELMA REDDING, says, "It is indeed an honour to have Billboard recognise Otis and his legacy by establishing an award in his honour." "During Otis' short life... he exemplified strength, companionship, longevity of talent and a commitment for controlling his business interests and career path, without ever neglecting his family, friends or fans."
