Talk show star Oprah Winfrey hosted a lavish birthday party for her pal, poet and author Maya Angelou's 75th birthday - and it cost her over $1 million (GBP660,000).

Billionaire Oprah spared no expense to ensure everything was perfect for Maya - the woman she considers her second mother.

Oprah forked out more than $500,000 (GBP330,000) to rent the plush 88-acre GRAYLYN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTER estate in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, near Maya's home. She also paid out hordes of cash on fine food and liquor; flowers, trees and landscaping; six circus-size tents; two dance floors, sound systems and lighting; guest transportation, and security.

The festivities ran from 4 April (03) until 6 April (03), and among the 150 guests in attendance were Bill Cosby, Dionne Warwick, Natalie Cole and Luther Vandross.

Bill Clinton and Barbra Streisand were invited but couldn't attend.

A reveller recalls, "Oprah told Maya, 'Listen here, girlfriend, you think this birthday party is something special, then wait to see what I'm going to do when you turn 100!'"
