The Hundred-Foot Journey Review

Very Good

A relentlessly smiley-glowy tone threatens to undo this film at every turn, but it's just about rescued by a spiky script and the adept cast. Director Lasse Hallstrom has been indulging in warm-fuzzy filmmaking since 2000's Chocolat, and this story (based on the Richard Morais book) seems set in the same fanciful, far too-cute France, created with digital effects rather than cinematography. Nothing is remotely realistic, but the characters are engaging and the food looks absolutely delicious. This is definitely not a film to see on an empty stomach.

The central character is Hassan (90210's Manish Dayal), who was born in India and developed his prodigious gift as a chef with his late mother. Now refugees in Europe, Hassan's Papa (Om Puri) is on a quest to establish a restaurant with his five children. They settle on an impossibly quaint French village, and set up their Indian eatery just across the road from the Michelin-starred restaurant run by the imperious Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), who of course immediately declares war on these interlopers. Meanwhile, Hassan begins exploring French cookery with Mallory's sexy sous-chef Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon). And his innate expertise catches Mallory's attention.

This simple twist helps propel the story and draw us in, as Hassan proves that he can teach Mallory a thing or two. Where this goes is played out in a simplistic way, but for audience members who are looking for meaning there's quite a bit of insight scattered around the script. Otherwise, Hallstrom is far more interested in superficial imagery, never quite letting the actors dig deep into their characters. Dayal shows some real texture as Hassan, but is reduced in the editing to merely smiling or frowning to show the character's frame of mind. And his relationship with Le Bon's impossibly perky Marguerite is almost painfully predictable.

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey may be 60 years-old but to her, age is just a number.

The media mogul used her own O Magazine to showcase how aging can be embraced and accepted, but this is easy to say when time doesn't seem to be catching up with you.

Featuring in the new double cover of her self-titled O, Winfrey looked beautiful while sporting a figure-hugging long red dress by Badgley Mischka, which she describes as "fabulous."

Nate Berkus & Jeremiah Brent Marry In Exclusive New York Ceremony

Nate Berkus Oprah Winfrey

Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are married! Designer Berkus, who is best known as the presenter of American Dream Builders, married his designer and TV personality partner Brent in an incredible ceremony at the New York Public Library on Saturday (3rd May). The couple made history by becoming the first same sex couple to marry at the famous wedding venue.

Berkus even included a few of his own designs in the wedding décor with the ceremony wall including a selection of fabrics from Berkus' own lines for Calico. The farm style wooden tables which the 220 guests dined on were covered with white table clothes also from Berkus' collection. On the subject of fabrics, 42-year-old Berkus wore a J. Crew suit and 29-year-old Brent wore a Saint Laurent.

Their chosen colours were minimalist with black, whites and creams embellished with touches of gold. The latter colour matched the couple's simple gold bands which they exchanged at the Sheri Salata officiated ceremony. Salata is the president of Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions and Winfrey herself, a long term friend of Berkus, also attended the ceremony. Winfrey was not the only celebrity to have helped the couple celebrate their nuptials as amongst the guests were Rachael Rae, Katie Lee and Elizabeth Hendrickson.

The couple became engaged last April whilst vacationing in Peru. Berkus has been in one major relationship prior to Brent but it ended in tragedy. Berkus was previously in a long term relationship with photographer Fernando Bengoechea who tragically died in the 2004 Sri Lanka tsunami.

People first reported the news of Berkus and Brent's marriage.

Congratulations to the happy couple!

Lindsay Lohan Oprah Winfrey

Lindsay Lohan’s OWN reality show came to a climactic conclusion Sunday, when the star admitted to suffering a miscarriage during the taping of the show. From Monday onward, Lindsay has been dealing with the aftermath of her confession.

Lindsay Lohan
Once again, news outlets are buzzing with questions about Lindsay Lohan's personal life.

Lindsay Lohan's Ex List Was Actually A Step In Her Recovery

Oprah Winfrey Ashton Kutcher Zac Efron Heath Ledger

Lindsay Lohan really did write down her now infamous list of lovers, which has been providing gossip fodder for a couple of weeks now. But she didn’t do it for the reasons you think. It turns out that Lohan jotted down the thirty or so names, while she was in rehab, as part of her therapy. So said Lohan herself, speaking out about the list on Watch What Happens Live. When questioned by Andy Cohen during the show’s Plead the Fifth segment, Lohan played coy at first.

Lindsay Lohan
It sounds like the list is a reminder of times now past for Lohan.

"I cannot confirm or deny it," she said.

Lindsay Lohan has been hit with the shame and bad publicity of a fellow entertainer criticising her current project. The 27 year-old actress can currently be seen on OWN's Lindsay, a reality show that follows the troubled star as she goes about her daily business and works to get her life back on track. However, comedian Rose O'Donnell has now added her voice to the admonishment of Lindsay in a caustic tweet.

O'Donnell publically blasted Lohan's show, writing "The Lindsay show is a tragedy - on every level - I hope one day she gets sober for real and watches these episodes - n sees what we all do" to hundreds of 'retweets' and 'favorites' demonstrating support for the outspoken television personality's view. Lindsay hasn't had chance to respond to O'Donnell's comments, having instead been snapped partying at the Coachella Festival in California.

Oprah Winfrey Tells It Straight To Lindsay Lohan, But Will It Work?

Oprah Winfrey Lindsay Lohan

Momma O’s been whipping Li-Lo’s butt in to shape after her recent shenanigans filming her self-titled reality show on OWN, “Lindsay”. Oprah had been informed by the film crew working on the reality show, which is aired on Oprah’s TV network, that Lindsay had been difficult to work with as well as not keeping to schedule. Documentary crew claimed they have been ‘held hostage’ by the Mean Girls actress, who caused ‘chaos’ and was constantly ‘screwing around’.

lindsay lohan oprah winfrey Oprah is not pleased with how Lindsay Lohan has been treating the camera crew

Oprah’s reaction to the (quite frankly unsurprising) news? How can we put this mildly...she was pretty pissed. Oprah flew out to Lindsay’s home in New York and gave Lohan a piece of her mind. Telling Lohan to ‘cut the bulls***’, Winfrey added she would not allow her to ‘f*** up’. "Who can do any work if the person does not show up?" asked Winfrey, who also explained, "My thing is, this is exactly what everyone said was going to happen, and I believed differently."

Lukewarm Ratings For "Lindsay" Give OWN Much Needed Boost

Lindsay Lohan Oprah Winfrey

It’s a very, very strange situation when a show that’s meant to depict a celebrity’s journey to recovery gets judged on its entertainment value. Still, that is the way it goes in celebrityland, so how did Lindsay Lohan’s OWN pilot fare? Not too well, according to ratings. The Hollywood Reporter says that the pilot episode of Lindsay only drew in about 892,000 viewers. Even so, at 10PM on a Sunday, that’s a small improvement on recent ratings for the same time slot.

Oprah Winfrey
Oprah is helping Lohan restart her career in exchange for a ratings boost for OWN.

In addition, Lindsay seemed to help the network towards its goal of attracting a younger demo to OWN. The show was popular with women aged 18-34, with whom the premiere's .53 rating was up 231 percent from the year prior. In addition, the total number of viewers marked the highest draw in six weeks for OWN. Not bad for a pilot, which has been labeled bland and mostly uneventful by critics. The show’s ratings can’t compare to those of Oprah’s interview with Lohan last year, but Lindsay definitely has development potential.

Lindsay Lohan Spends Most Of OWN Pilot Cooling Her Heels

Lindsay Lohan Oprah Winfrey

Lindsay Lohan’s new reality show premiered on Oprah over the weekend and the star, who has become the poster child for child star go bad, managed to shock everyone again. By not being that shocking at all.

Lindsay Lohan
Lohan is back on the straight and narrow... in the first episode, at least.

Sure, the first episode shows Lohan struggling to toe the line – by the end of it, she’s having obvious trouble following the restrictions set by Oprah. Her troubles with substance abuse and numerous DUIs aren’t directly addressed, but are alluded to, when the actress tries to rent a place in New York. One of the final scenes Sunday showed an exasperated Lohan reprimanding her real estate broker because she's required to get renter's liability insurance before she can move into her new apartment.

The Armstrong Lie Review

Very Good

This biographical documentary about disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong feels eerily gentle compared to filmmaker Alex Gibney's recent films, the WikiLeaks doc We Steal Secrets and the Catholic priest expose Mea Maxima Culpa. But then it was originally conceived as a celebration of Armstrong's comeback at the 2009 Tour de France, which is still at the heart of the film.

It was during this comeback that Armstrong's stellar image started to slip, with old rivalries and gurgling rumours surging to the surface. Gibney intercuts interviews he shot at the time with more recent chats, including a conversation immediately after Armstrong taped his notorious confessional interview with Oprah Winfrey. So we vividly see Armstrong's two-faced personality. Along the way, Gibney also traces the cyclist's remarkable rise to fame, his near death from cancer and the secret doping system he used to win the Tour de France seven times from 1999 to 2005. Armstrong's rationale is that everyone else was doing the same thing, so it was actually a level playing field.

Only of course it wasn't, because many cyclists remained clean and were edged out of the winning position as a result. Gibney also talks to a wide variety of experts, journalists and fellow riders who discuss the sport's culture of omerta (a mafia-style code of honour). From the news reports, we already know about the many years of deception, which is why society no longer holds professional athletes to such high, clean standards. It's clearly more about the money now than the human achievement. And there's so much cash to be made that competitors will break every rule there is if they think they'll get away with it.

Winfrey opted for a low-key celebration, instead of the originally planned blowout.

Oprah Confesses She Never Wanted A Family: 'My Kids Would Hate Me'

Oprah Winfrey Stedman Graham Gayle King

Oprah Winfrey may have saved a lot of families and taken care of a lot of people over the past 30 years she's been on television, but kids have always been out of the question.

The world's most famous talk-show host has admitted that her immensely busy high-flying career has meant that bringing up children would've been almost impossible. The 59-year-old has been in a relationship with businessman Stedman Graham since 1986 and, although the pair were engaged at one point, they never made it down the aisle; getting round to starting a family, thus, was never on the cards.

'If I had kids, my kids would hate me', she admitted to The Hollywood Reporter. 'They would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because something [in my life] would have had to suffer and it would've probably been them.' As a teenager, she was too busy thinking about making a difference in the world and helping people en masse to worry about where she was going to find time to settle down - unlike her long time best friend Gayle King

Nigella Lawson is one of the most hotly discussed celebrities in the world right now, and all for the wrong reasons too, as her supposed drug habits look unlikely to disappear any time soon. With her reputation on the verge of being in tatters, Nigella will look to address these rumours once and for all and to set the record straight, taking to one of the biggest platforms on television to deliver her side of the story.

Nigella has so far avoided discussing the scandal in public and when she appears at Isleworth Crown Court to give evidence against the defendants, she plans on only answering questions about the case. The Butler Review

Good

This is an strangely slushy movie from Lee Daniels, whose last two films (Precious and The Paperboy) bristled with unexpected life. By contrast, this star-packed drama uses a true story to trace the Civil Rights struggle from the 1950s to the present day. But it's been so fictionalised that it feels kind of like a variation on Forrest Gump.

Cecil Gaines (Whitaker) grew up on a Georgia cotton plantation, where the cruel master's kindly mother (Redgrave) taught him to be a house servant. Years later, he marries Gloria (Winfrey) and moves to Washington DC, where he gets a job in the White House as a butler to presidents from Eisenhower (Williams) to Reagan (Rickman). His job description is simple: "You hear nothing, you see nothing, you only serve." And yet as the nation grapples with its racist culture, he has a quiet influence on each leader who moves through the house.

Whitaker narrates the film in drawling flashbacks, while the story flickers between Cecil and his eldest son Louis (Oyelowo), an activist who is involved in every key moment in the Civil Rights movement. And their younger son (Kelley) is sent to Vietnam. So it's like a condensed version of late 20th century American history, made notable by the lively cast of cameo players including Marsden (as JFK), Schreiber (LBJ), Ellis (MLK) and Cusack (Nixon), plus Fonda as a lively Nancy Reagan.

Last Night's SNL Featured The Neglected Characters - All Of Them, Played By Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington Oprah Winfrey Michelle Obama Taran Killam Kenan Thompson

They had to do it. There couldn’t have been a better opportunity for SNL to address the diversity issue than a guest appearance by Kerry Washington. SNL fans were eager to see how the show would tackle its obvious lack of black comediennes with a prominent diversity advocate (not to mention an exceptional actress) like Washington on board. They were not disappointed.

Kerry Washington, Paley Center
Washington had to play both the First Lady, Oprah and a whole host of other celebrities.

So you know how people have been complaining that the lack of a black comedienne severely limits the cast’s topical sketches? The two main examples were Oprah and Michelle Obama – with noone to impersonate them, SNL has missed some golden opportunities over the past six years (the last time Michelle Obama was featured in a skit, she was played by Maya Rudolph in 2007). Not last night though, because Washington was on a mission to perform all the sketches! All the sketches that SNL hasn’t done due to casting limitations. The writers didn’t waste any time and the Scandal actress came out as the first lady at the very beginning of the episode causing President Obama (Jay Pharoah) to remark, "I feel like it's been years since I've seen you!" See what they did there?

Kerry Washington Taran Killam Kenan Thompson Oprah Winfrey Michelle Obama Beyonce Knowles Eminem

Kerry Washington has been killing it lately – the newly pregnant star is doing great both in her personal and her professional life, with an upcoming SNL hosting gig to look forward to. Kerry Washington, Essence Black Women In Hollywood Luncheon
Washington looked glamorous as ever, promoting her SNL episode.

To be fair, the actress isn’t showing any sort of baby bump and looks killer in a purple ensemble (and matching lipstick.) Killam on the other hand, has opted for the traditional uniform – patterned shirt and neutral cardigan. But enough about the clothes, let’s talk about the controversy.

Oprah Winfrey Refuses To Sell ObamaCare For President Obama - Is A Feud With Michelle Obama To Blame?

Oprah Winfrey Barack Obama Michelle Obama

Oprah Winfrey is known for her generosity and warm spirit, but when it comes to affordable healthcare for the United State's most needy citizen, it turns out she is as cold hearted as a Republican congressman. At least, that's how it appears on the surface, however the Queen of daytime chat may have another reason for not supporting ObamaCare after all.

Oprah was approached by President Obama to become one of the celebrity spokespersons for ObamaCare, but apparently told the President that she wanted nothing to do with the progressive piece of legislation. A known supporter of President Barrack Obama, Oprah campaigned around the clock during his 2008 election, but it seems that over the years her opinions on the most powerful man on the planet have changed somewhat.

As initially reported by the New York Post, Oprah spurned the chance to join the many celebrities already supporting the Affordable Care Act; a piece of legislation that aims on providing healthcare for the country's most vulnerable and financially challenged citizens. Already, the inclusive bill has gained celebrity backing from Nina Dobrev, Jennifer Hudson and a host of other well-known names, but Oprah wanted nothing to do with the campaign.

'The Oprah Winfrey Collection' will go on sale at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club - so it isn't exactly your conventional yard sale - on 2 Novemeber, with all procedes going towards the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation College Fund. And just as a disclaimer, Oprah probably won't be 'hosting' the auction. She probably won't even be there on the day.

The lot includes a treasure trove of portraits of the star, furniture, a painting of Harriet Tubman and a whole heap more.

This weekend Lee Daniels' The Butler may not have been, financially, as successful as last weekend. It made over $17 million this week as opposed to the $25 million it earned in its opening weekend. Meanwhile We're the Millers, starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis, made $13 million down from $17 million last weekend. The comedy made a similar amount to The Butler in its opening weekend ($26 million) yet has continued, by comparison, to be more financially profitable.

Forest Whitaker Chloe Moretz Oprah Winfrey

Kick-Ass 2 – the follow up to 2010’s smash hit Kick-Ass – was expected to build up on its predecessor’s success by dominating the box office. But a slew of negative reviews have led to a fourth place finish, lagging behind Lee Daniel’s The Butler - starring Forest Whitaker.

The Civil Rights drama grabbed an impressive $25m on its opening weekend, possibly due to an all-star cast featuring Oprah Winfrey and Cuba Gooding Jr. and possibly due to a strong set of reviews. Either way, Lee Daniels will be delighted with the early response to his film.

The Butler – officially known as Lee Daniel’s The Butler – has been well-received by the critics of late. Particularly lauded has been the all-star cast, but the decision to cast such a famous bunch wasn’t an easy one for Daniels.

“I had a choice of going with unknown or known actors. I decided to roll the dice and go with knowns. Partially because I liked the idea of the audience getting to unknow the actors, people think they know, but we could change those perceptions of who they are,” Daniels told Fastcocreate.com.

Shop Assistant Denies Oprah Winfrey Racism: "I Hope This Nightmare Ends Soon"

Oprah Winfrey Tina Turner

The world rallied around chatshow host Oprah Winfrey last week when she claimed to be a victim or racial prejudice whilst out shopping in the Swiss city of Zurich. The 59 year-old, who is the world's only African-American billionaire, told Entertainment Weekly, via Sky News, how she was in Switzerland to attend the wedding of soul diva Tina Turner and decided to do a little shopping. The media mogul entered an exclusive boutique and was told, even after repeated requests, that a £24,477 ($38,000) was "too expensive" for her and was offered other, cheaper handbags.

The world reeled in shock on Ms. Winfrey's behalf as the unsavoury connotations that arose from the Swiss shop girl's words painted an ugly picture of not only the shop, but the country in some people's eyes. Trudie Goetz, the owner of the boutique that was later revealed as Trois Pommes and who also attended Turner's wedding the day after, apologised and described the incident as a "misunderstanding" and that Oprah was "absolutely allowed" to look at the bag behind the security screen, admitting that her staff member's English "isn't...good."

Winfrey was in Switzerland attending Tina Turner's wedding when the incident occurred in late July. Whilst shopping in Zurich, Winfrey told Entertainment Tonight: "I go into a store and say to the woman, "'excuse me, may I see that bag over your head?' and she says to me 'no, it's too expensive.'" Winfrey proceeded to ask again to see the bag but the sales assistant responded "no, no, no, you don't want to see that one, you want to see this one, because that one will cost too much and you will not be able to afford that."

Covering the course of thirty years and eight presidents, some of the most important moments in the history of the 20th century are retold from the unique point of view from within the presidential chambers.
