Miley Cyrus Sings With The Flaming Lips: Why It Was Actually A Pretty Good Cover [Video]

In one of the more surreal collaborations of recent times, pop star Miley Cyrus has teamed up with The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and Steven Drozd for a performance of the latter's hit 'Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1' during the former's concert. During her Bangerz tour show at LA's Staples Center, Miley welcomed the Oklahoman rockers onstage for a cover collaboration.

Considering Miley's demographic is comprised of mostly pre-teens, there's little surprise than fan footage from the event shows almost no one singing along with Coyne and Cyrus but The Flaming Lips were given a warm welcome of manic screams nonetheless. Since footage from the 'Yoshimi' cover hit the internet, reactions have been divided between those who think Miley chose a great song to cover whilst showcasing her impressive voice, and those who feel that even with Wayne and Steven present, a classic song has been butchered.

Watch Miley Cyrus Perform With The Flaming Lips:

We're inclined to sit with the first camp, not only because it was a chance for Miley to actually sing rather than that annoying drone she often does but also because it shows that for all the raunchy antics and half-naked parading, she's actually a pretty intelligent and talented performer who knows her coordinates on the great map of music.

It's not even like The Flaming Lips appeared under duress either: Coyne has specifically voiced his admiration for the 21 year-old pop star in a recent Rolling Stone interview: "I like her aesthetic more than a Lady Gaga, who this year to me feels like, 'Take me serious' and Miley's like, 'I don't give a f**k,' which to me is always a lot more fun," he said. "I really like that thing where the people are inside the rainbow and they walk around. I just like that sort of stuff," Wayne explained.

"I'm so f**king excited, I don't think you guys understand what this means right now. F**k yes!" shouted Miley before Wayne, who was holding a giant "F**K YEAH" balloon, and keyboardist Steven, who was wearing a red riding cape, help her perform the song.

The same gig also saw Miley smooch 'I Kissed A Girl' Katy Perry.

'Yoshimi' is now added to the intriguing roster of songs that the 'We Can't Stop' singer has covered, including Arctic Monkeys' 'Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?', Dolly Parton's 'Jolene' and OutKast's 'Hey Ya!.' Each time, Miley's covers have been thoughtful and have respected the original whilst allowing the former Disney star to make her own imprint.

What's more, alongside all the predictable debauchery like riding a hotdog and pretending to blow Bill Clinton, moments like this actually make Miley's shows worth watching. Let her continue, we say!
