Tatiana Maslany - 5 Reasons Why You Should Be Watching Orphan Black

Orphan Black has returned for its second season, placing Canadian Television firmly on the map and already causing fans to bandy questions and solutions back and forth across the web. Very briefly, Orphan Black follows Sarah Manning, a con artist who witnesses the suicide of a woman who looks exactly like her. She assumes this woman's identity and begins a journey in which she meets a series of clones and begins to discover her origins.

So, without giving very much else away, for those who have yet to see it, here are five reasons why you should be watching Orphan Black:

1.The Show's Star Tatiana Maslany.

Somehow Maslany manages to play the dozens of clones the main protagonist Sarah comes into contact with through the course of the first series. It's not simply standing around in different costumes either, each clone has a unique character and back story which Maslany manages to evoke at whim. It's an impressive feat and quite unlike other shows.

2.Who's the Hero?

The villains and heroes are dynamic characters with varying attributes and motivations. Their characters are not two dimensional and display both positive and negative qualities, no one more so than Sarah. This effectively means that, at any moment, there's the possibility you may be rooting for a character which is about to turn on our heroine. As such, Orphan Black in some respects places the audience in a similar position to Sarah, an unnerving experience at times!

3.It's Science Fiction Everyone Can Enjoy.

Whether it's the rise in comic book heroes or the reboot of Star Trek, we're enamoured with science fiction. The genre went through something of a slump in the nineties and noughties, but it's back in the mainstream and with a vengeance. However, those who dislike sci-fi should not be overly concerned with the genetics and cloning referred to throughout Orphan Black, as there is plenty of human drama to keep even the most cynical of viewers enraptured.

4.It Has Fast Paced, Rapidly Developing Plotlines.

There's never a dull moment in Orphan Black and the plots are constantly developing. Some may have thought Orphan Black would burn out by the end of the first series, but it has continued into the second with grace and continued bravado. Whilst some commentators have expressed concern about the ability of the writers to continue developing the plotline, if they continue at their rapid pace, it seems from they still have plenty to explore.

5.It's Ideal Binge Watching

Orphan Black is the kind of show which enthrals and enraptures, as reviews and current media obsession attest to, so it makes ideal binge watching. It's entertaining and quick with a perfect balance of drama and action. So, especially over the Easter weekend, why not begin watching Orphan Black following a hectic family lunch and far too many Easter eggs?

Orphan Black airs on BBC America at 9/8 and in the UK on BBC on Wednesday from 30th April at 9pm.
