They're their biggest boyband in the world so it's no wonder One Direction have managed to reach a spectacular 12 million sales (including singles, albums and DVDs) over the course of their relatively short career. In recognition for their achievement, they've been awarded a disc by their labels Syco and Sony Music
One Direction became the first British band to go straight to number one in the US with a debut album following the release of 'Up All Night', becoming 2012's biggest album in America with 1 million sold nationally and 3 million globally.
Debut single 'What Makes You Beautiful' had 5 million copies sold in total, while their subsequent live DVD went Platinum in the US and became the best selling music DVD of the whole year.
'We are obviously ecstatic and incredibly humbled by our award today', says band member Liam Payne. 'We have an incredible team of people around us who have helped us achieve this and above all we would like to thank our fans. We owe all our success to them.'
One Direction are set to make a live appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 6th, where they also appear in award categories for Best Pop Act and Best Pop Video. If that wasn't enough, they'll also be doing a Madison Square Garden concert on December 3rd ahead of their 2013 world tour.
The group are currently in the process of writing their second album.
