Zayn Malik has quit twitter over online abuse.

The One Direction heartthrob deleted his account on the social networking site yesterday (21.08.12) because he was infuriated by spiteful comments from twitter users, especially regarding his relationship with Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards.

Before his exit, the 19-year-old singer wrote: ''The reason I don't tweet as much as I use to, is because I'm sick of all the useless opinions and hate that I get daily goodbye twitter (sic)''

He then reassured fans he would still be contactable, adding: ''Fans that have something nice to say can tweet me on the One Direction account. (sic)''

The band's fan base, known as Directioners, got #comebackZayn and #Zayncomeback trending on the micro-blogging site last night.

The pop star was allegedly receiving insults because of a rumour he gave his phone number to a sexy Olympics dancer after the London 2012 closing ceremony.

Zayn told a friend on social messenger Kik: ''Don't worry about me, I'm fine. I just deleted my account because of all the hate I was getting just by tweeting something simple.

''And all the rumours of me smoking weed and cheating. I don't need to read any of that negativity.''

Zayn has been dating fellow 'x factor' singer Perrie, also 19, since the start of the year and the pair went public in April.

The pretty blonde also deleted her twitter account in May.
