Lee Daniels' The Butler has edged out One Direction's new concert movie to top America's Labor Day weekend box office chart.

The British boy band's Morgan Spurlock documentary, One Direction: This Is Us, grossed $17 million (£11.3 million) in its first three days on release, narrowly beating Daniels' civil rights drama, which came in second place with $14.7 million (£9.8 million) on Sunday.

However, The Butler managed to pull ahead in ticket sales for the full holiday weekend (30Aug13-02Sep13), earning a total of $20 million (£13.3 million) in its third weekend on release - $2 million (Gbp1.3 million) more than the pop stars' opening four-day haul.
