One Direction are ''ecstatic'' to have sold 12 million records in less than a year.

The 'What Makes You Beautiful' boy band were presented with a special disc by their label, Syco, for selling eight million singles, three million albums and a million DVDs in the last 12 months.

Band member Liam Payne said: ''We are obviously ecstatic and incredibly humbled by our award today.''

The group's debut album, 'Up All Night', hit the number one spot in 16 different countries and they became the first ever UK band to debut at number one on the US Billboard chart.

'Up All Night' is also currently the top selling debut album of 2012 in the US.

Liam and band mates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik have picked up many awards, most recently three trophies at the 2012 Teen Choice Awards.

This week it was also announced they have been nominated for two MTV Music Awards, for Best Pop Act and Best Pop Video and will perform at the awards ceremony in September.

One Direction are currently writing and recording their second album, and completed a recording session with veteran boy band McFly last week.

Liam recently tweeted to fans: ''In the studio working on the second album, I'm really excited for you guys to hear it!''
