Boy band One Direction made the unlikely partnering with the cast of 'Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues' in an appearance on 'Saturday Night Live'.

The night was hosted by funny man Paul Rudd, who plays 'Brian Fantana', and he started his opening monologue by recalling his last appearances on the show.

However, there was a sudden ear-piercing round of applause which signalled the arrival of the British heartthrobs from One Direction.

But Rudd wasn't about to be upstage be the teen idols as he came prepared.

"You've got your boy band, well I've brought my man band," he said while co-stars Will Ferrell, Steve Carell and David Koechner emerged from backstage.

Hilarious trash talking ensued with Ferrell exclaiming, "Why don't you beat it Menudo."

This short but funny rivalry calmed down eventually and they all joined together to sing a rendition of 'Afternoon Delight' and Rudd emphatically announced, "We are Nine Direction."

The boys from X-Factor UK weren't done there, for the second sketch Rudd portrayed a crazed middle aged fan who was camping out with a group of girls while waiting for a glimpse of the band.

Paul played 'Don Charles', aka One Direction's #1 fan, and joked, "Do I love One Direction? I don't know," adding, "Is Liam's favorite color purple?"

The campers then all began to sing 'Best Song Ever' as the boys appeared.

"Oh you're a great dad, what's her name?" Liam asked Rudd when he gave him a photo to sign.

"Her name is Dan Charles," Rudd replied.

"That's a really pretty name," Harry said, joining in on the act.

One Direction were not there just to act as they also performed two tracks from 'Midnight Memories', their already huge hit 'Story of My Life' and the debuting 'Through The Dark'.

After their performance Harry posted on twitter how he enjoyed the appearance, "A massive thank you to @nbcsnl for having us back last night. It was a lot of fun. And now I fancy Paul Rudd."
