One Direction unleashed their new single ‘Perfect’ upon the world on Friday morning, and the song’s potential subject matter has got the Twittersphere in a frenzy!

1D fans have been speculating that the new song’s lyrics are about Harry Styles’ ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift, whom the singer dated for three months between October 2012 and January 2013.

“If you're looking for someone to write your breakup songs about / baby I'm perfect, baby we're perfect” go the words to the chorus, possibly a reference to Swift’s fondness for writing songs about her ex-partners. However, the potential Swifty allusions don’t stop there.

On ‘Perfect’, Styles is heard to sing: “If you like midnight driving with the windows down” – while Swift’s recent single ‘Style’ features the lyrics: “Midnight, you come and pick me up, no headlights.” Most explicitly of all, the group sing “if you're looking for someone to write your breakup songs about”. That would seem pretty cut and dried, then, wouldn’t it?

However, when asked directly by Australian radio DJ Smallzy about it, Styles denied that it was specifically about his relationship with Swift. “People take songs and three different people can think that it means three completely different things, so to be honest it translates to whoever just based on… what they take from it.”

‘Perfect’ is the second single to be released from their upcoming fifth album Made in the A.M., which is coming out on November 13th. Though it only got released on Friday morning (October 16th), it shot immediately to Number 1 on the iTunes chart.

The video for the new song will launch next week, and was apparently shot in a hotel near Times Square in New York City. 1D fans buying into the Swift diss track theory will be watching closely for any further references.
