Actor Omar Sharif has been selected to receive a GOLDEN LION award at Italy's upcoming Venice Film Festival for his 50-year screen career.

The Egyptian-born 71-year-old, stars of such films as Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence Of Arabia and FUNNY GIRL, receives the good news just days after he was convicted of headbutting a police officer at a casino near Paris, France and received a one-month suspended sentence.

Newspaper reports said Sharif had been arguing with a croupier when an officer intervened and a scuffle broke out.
