Broadchurch returns for season 2 on ITV tonight with both David Tennant and Olivia Colman back in the saddle to solve another provincial murder. Chris Chibnall's drama won acclaim during its twisting and turning first season and the teaser clips appear to confirm that season two picks up immediately after the harrowing events of the finale.

"Chris set up a lot of things we never even thought about in the first series and now they've come to the fore," Colma said earlier this year. "At the read-through we were going, "You sneaky b*****d"."

Numerous other stars from the first season are also returning for season 2, particularly Jodie Whittaker, whose character Beth Latimer was found to be expecting at the end of the first season. In the new season she is heavily pregnant, so it's safe to assume Chibnall has moved the show forward around six months.

As for the new faces - Charlotte Rampling, Eve Myles, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Joanthan Bailey, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Meera Syal and James D-Arcy are all joining the cast. Though most of the roles are being kept under wraps, we do know that D'Arcy will play a shifty looking character named Lee ("I want my life back!" he yells in the trailer). Acclaimed actress Rampling plays local resident Jocelyn Knight.

Season two will focus on the investigation of another murder, though it won't mirror the events of the first.

"I promise we do not start with the discovery of another body beneath the cliffs," Chibnall told the Radio Times. "The feel of the show is slightly different this time. Grief is not our driving emotion this year."

Broadchurch season 2 premieres on ITV tonight (January 5, 2014) at 9pm.
