Spike Lee Slapped With Copyright Infringement Lawsuit

Spike Lee Oldboy

Filmmaker Spike Lee has been slapped with a copyright infringement lawsuit by artist Juan Luis Garcia over his Oldboy movie posters.

In November (13), Garcia wrote an open letter to the Do the Right Thing director claiming the advertisement agency bosses behind the film had used the images without his permission after he declined to allow them to be used because of a low monetary offer.

The artist also took issue with the tags reading, "© 2013 Spike Lee," and "© 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks.," which were featured on the posters.

Josh Brolin Sought Out Oldboy Director For Remake Blessing

Josh Brolin Oldboy

Josh Brolin sought out Chan-Wook Park's blessing before he agreed to star in a remake of the director's classic 2003 thriller Oldboy.

The chilling original focused on a newly-released kidnap victim seeking answers about his 15 years of captivity.

Brolin, who has replaced Will Smith as the lead in Spike Lee's remake, had to make sure the film's original director was happy for his movie to be given the Hollywood makeover before he signed on.

He tells Total Film magazine, "I wrote an email to Park, who I really love, when I tried to get him to direct (action film) Jonah Hex. He almost did it, and when I let him go, I was like, 'If you're not completely into this, then we'll find something else to do together.'

Rooney Mara was also briefly attached to the film, which will star Josh Brolin, but the lead female role has since been filled by Jane Eyre star Mia Wasikowska.

Ironically, Brolin has just completed work on the new Men in Black sequel, which stars Smith.

Chan-Wook: 'Violent Movies Have Poisoned Me'

Oldboy

South Korean director CHAN-WOOK PARK insists making violent movies has "poisoned" his soul - and he had to make 2005 film LADY VENGEANCE to create a softer kind of hatred.

The Oldboy film-maker became increasingly disturbed by the darkness in his work, but producing a more feminine thriller with actress YEONG-AE LEE balanced the brutality.

The director says, "After making two revenge movies one after another (SYMPATHY FOR MR VENGEANCE and OLDBOY), I realised the overload of rage, hatred and violence became poison and made my soul into a barren land.
