The Babymakers Trailer

There comes a time in a relationship when baby talk must be had. When Audrey brings the subject up with husband Tommy, he doesn't think sowing the seeds of nature would be a problem - especially since he sold a sample of his sperm to the local sperm bank some years ago. However, after being unsuccessful at getting his wife pregnant several times, they go to a doctor who informs him of his extremely low sperm count. Feeling slightly emasculated, he suggests that there could be a problem, perhaps, with Audrey's body, but the doctor dismisses the idea as her ovaries are in perfect shape. Remembering when he sold his sperm sample, he revisits the sperm bank and requests it back in a last bid to have a baby. When the man at the clinic tells him it has already been sold, Tommy offers twice the amount of money they did in order to win it back. He is refused but his friends persuade him that he has the right to steal it back and so they set out on a scheme to retrieve his last chance at fatherhood.

The Taqwacores Review

Very Good
Set in a subculture most people would never guess exists, this entertaining comedy-drama shatters stereotypes in every scene. With so much ignorance and paranoia raging in the media, it's one of the year's most important films.

Yusef (Naderi) is a good Muslim who moves to Buffalo for university. There he moves into an Islamic flatshare, but his roommates aren't what he expects: devout Umar (Mann), punk rocker Jehangir (Rains), shirtless skater Ayyub (Eryaman), anarchic Fasiq (Tran) and burqa-wearing party girl Rabeya (DeWulf).

They all gather for prayers in the living room, which doubles as a mosque. And they're getting ready to host a weekend of Taqwacores, Muslim punk musicians from a movement that started on the West Coast.

The Back-up Plan Review

Good
As far as romantic comedies go, this is just about watchable. Even though it's both silly and sappy, it has a vaguely realistic tone that lets us identify with the characters. Even if the romance falls flat, the romance is sweet.

Zoe (Lopez) is a busy but single New Yorker desperate to have a child, so she heads to the sperm bank. After her doctor (Klein) helps her conceive, even a clash with an annoying stranger, Stan (O'Loughlin), can't ruin her day. Of course, she runs into him again, and this time notices that he's both annoying and drop-dead gorgeous. So how will he react when he finds out that Zoe is pregnant?

Pledge This! Review

Terrible
Rarely have I truly said "I wish I had my 90 minutes back" and meant it sincerely. But Pledge This! is a film with absolutely no saving graces, nothing worth redeeming it. It's a waste of time in every way, but I guess I should have known: This is, after all, a movie that doesn't just feature Paris Hilton; she's the headliner. The film is yet another Revenge of the Nerds ripoff, only with gawky sorority girls battling it out with Hilton, who rules over her own sorority and "admits" the awkward gals just to humiliate them later. The film borrows liberally from Strangers with Candy, too, featuring an older co-ed with a penchant for drugs and swarthy talk. There's plenty of gratuitous nudity, of course, and that's the film at its most intelligent. Ultimately, the film hits rock bottom when it turns into a promo piece for FHM magazine, which plans to feature Hilton and her sorority on its cover. Justice was done soon after Pledge This! was dumped on the market, however: FHM promptly went out of business.
