With a plethora of blockbusters on the marquees, it turned out to be a terrific weekend for theater owners. For the studios that had sunk hundreds of millions of dollars into the films and must share half the revenue with the theaters, there No Doubt was mixed reaction to the mutual cannibalizations. Nevertheless, the box office was up 22 percent over the same weekend a year ago when Ice Age: Continental Drift opened with $46.6 million. Universal's Despicable Me 2 earned nearly that amount, $43.9 million, as it topped the box office this weekend in its second outing. Adam Sandler's Grown Ups 2 placed second with $41.5 million, while Pacific Rim opened with $37.3 million. The results lifted the overall box office for the year to $6.02 billion, almost equal with last year's $6.05 billion. Attendance is down just 0.34 percent.
