Spencer Elden was just four months old when he shot the iconic album cover.
The naked swimming baby from the cover of Nirvana’s classic Nevermind album has recreated the cover’s iconic image, all grown-up. Spencer Elden was just a few months old when he shot the photo for the album’s cover and now he’s celebrating 25 years since its release.
On the original cover Elden appears naked and the now 25-year-old was wiling to go au natural again. “I said to the photographer, ‘Let’s do it naked.’ But he thought that would be weird, so I wore my swim shorts,” he told the New York Post.
“The anniversary means something to me. It’s strange that I did this for five minutes when I was four months old and it became this really iconic image,” he added. “It’s cool but weird to be part of something so important that I don’t even remember.”
Speaking to Time magazine, Elden said that in 1991 photographer Kirk Weddle asked his parents if he could photograph him for the cover of a then-unknown band’s album. Eden said the shoot lasted 15 seconds and his parents were paid just $200.
“Looking back, it feels kind of stupid doing interviews about it, because I had nothing to do with it, but a lot to do with it all at the same time,” Elden said of his fame as the Nevermind baby. “It’s a really weird feeling being a part of someone else’s momentum—being caught up in this wake of stuff.”
