Review of Modern Love EP by Nina Nesbitt

Scottish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt released her promising debut album in 2013, narrowly missing out on the top ten of the UK charts, but marking her out as one to watch.  Having recently played a trio of headline dates she now releases this EP, though confirmation of album number two remains outstanding.

Nina Nesbitt Modern Love EP

For those who know Nesbitt as an indie-pop songstress, lead track 'Chewing Gum' comes as a huge shock - but in a wonderful way.  Full of electrified stomp, Nesbitt turns in a both sassy and seductive vocal performance complimented by several synthesised hooks, resulting in an impressive evolution from the 'Selfies' composer.  The inclusion of a demo version also provides insight into the development of the track, for those into this sort of thing.  Less boundary-pushing is the light R'n'B balladry of 'Take You To Heaven', perhaps most notable for a slight vocal similarity to Taylor Swift, while the demo of 'Masquerade' is further evidence of Nesbitt's music maturing.  A solid return overall with one exceptional track, it is evidence that the 21 year old remains one of the UK's most promising young musicians.
