The X Factor results show was an emotional affair on Thursday evening (December 8, 2011), with fan-favorite Rachel Crow, 13, being sent home after judge Nicole Scherzinger sent the vote to deadlock.
Upon hearing the result from host Steve Jones, Crow looked on disbelievingly before collapsing to the ground and yelling, "Mommy, you promised promised me!!". Her mother subsequently rushed on stage and attempted to comfort the young singer, while Nicole burst into tears at the judge's desk. It was down to Simon Cowell to get a hold on the situation, and the X Factor boss duly made his way onto the stage, picked the sobbing teen from off the floor, and threw his arms around her. Scherzinger soon followed but stood awkwardly behind Rachel as host Jones tried to quiz the latest eliminee, according to the UK's Daily Mail. The former Pussycat Dolls star had the opportunity to save the teen but instead opted to call the vote a tie and head to deadlock, where Marcus Canty was eventually triumphant. Crow's reaction will no doubt reignite the debate into whether the relaxed age-limit rules are a positive step for the competition. In the UK, the age range is fixed at 16, though some industry insiders have claimed that is still too low. Luke Lucas, 16, was axed after a disastrous audition at Gary Barlow's house, after which he broke in tears and had to be comforted by crew members. During a performance on reality show Britain's Got Talent, 10-year-old Hollie Steel forgot the words to her song, breaking down in tears and pleading with the show's hosts for another chance.
Rachel Crow's elimination means Marcus Canty joins Josh Krajick, Chris Rene and Melanie Amaro to battle it out in next week's semi-finals. Rocker Lenny Kravitz and R&B superstar Mary J Blige were the special guests on Thursday evening, with the former performing a medley of his tracks Rock Star City Life and Are You Gonna Go My Way?
