Nicolas Cage is at the top of the American box office for the third weekend in row, after hauling in an extra $17.1 million (GBP9 million) at the American box office.

The action movie lifted its total to $110.2 million (GBP58 million) after 17 days in release, dominating a weekend where no films debuted on wide release.

Christmas With The Kranks, starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Tim Allen, landed at second place after taking in $11.7 million (GBP6.1 million), followed by THE POLAR EXPRESS with $11 million (GBP5.7 million).

The Incredibles and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie rounded out the top five with $9.2 million (GBP4.8 million) and $7.8 million (GBP4.1 million) respectively.

CLOSER, starring Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Natalie Portman and Clive Owen, opened strongly in a narrower release, taking in $7.7 million (GBP4 million) from just 476 theatres.
