Joe Review

Very Good

Nicolas Cage gives a rare internalised performance in this atmospheric drama, which has a stronger sense of its location than it does of its story. It's been so long since Cage has been this good that we've almost forgotten that he can do it (see Adaptation or of course Leaving Las Vegas). And he shares the screen beautifully with rising-star Tye Sheridan (Mud) in this strikingly observational tale about second chances.

It's set in the rural South, where Joe (Cage) is an ex-con who has rebuilt his life as a contractor. His big job at the moment is to kill trees on land being developed outside a small town. While Joe is haunted by his past, he is respected by his work crew. His only companions are his faithful dog and a prostitute (Adriene Mishler) who serves as his makeshift girlfriend. Then the 15-year-old Gary (Sheridan) arrives looking for work, and Joe takes him under his wing. Gary's father G-Daawg (Gary Poulter) is a waste-of-space drunk who causes trouble everywhere he goes, leaving the family to live squatting in a falling-down house. Joe can identify with this troubled situation, and Gary needs a real father figure, so the two begin to rely on each other.

This is about as far as the film's narrative goes, apart from a side strand that cranks into gear to push things into a somewhat overwrought final act. This relates to Joe's violent past refusing to fade away, as a local thug (Ronnie Gene Blevins) continually goads Joe to revive a long-simmering feud. Which of course threatens the delicate balance of his positive friendship with Gary. Cage and Sheridan are terrific as the soft-spoken tough-guy mentor and his fiercely determined protege who help put each others' lives into focus. And the surrounding actors are strikingly authentic, especially non-actor Poulter as the relentless loser G-Daawg, a performance made even more poignant with the news that Poulter died while living on the streets shortly after filming finished.

OK

Nicolas Cage acts his socks off in this thinly plotted thriller, which is set in the same moral universe as the Taken movies, where mass murder is excusable if your daughter's been kidnapped. Despite a low-budget aesthetic, director Paco Cabezas invests each scene with straight-faced emotion, never acknowledging the general implausibility and irresponsibility of the story itself. But with Cage's rampant performance and Cabezas' visual style, the film almost works as melodramatic escapism.

Cage plays slick businessman Paul, who has finally put his criminal past behind him. But when his over-protected 16-year-old daughter (Aubrey Peeples) is kidnapped, he digs out his old leather jacket and turns to his boyhood partners in crime (Max Ryan and Michael McGrady) for help. While Paul's new young wife (Rachel Nichols) urges him to sort out this mess, his old police detective pal (Danny Glover) warns Paul against taking the law into his own hands. But he can't help it. Especially when it becomes clear that the Russian mobster (Pasha D. Lynchikoff) he clashed with nearly 20 years earlier might be involved in an attempt to get revenge.

While the plot itself doesn't have any real surprises, it at least tries to twist and turn its way through the story. And along the way, Paul's experience gets increasingly emotional, giving Cage the chance to indulge in everything from slow-burn frustration to tear-stained grief to full-on mad-dog violence. Rage indeed! Cage explodes with fury so many times that he seems in danger of transforming into the Hulk at any moment. And the actors around him wisely back up and let him have the stage to himself. Otherwise, there isn't much to the film, with a series of average car chases and fist-fights that are brutal but forgettable.

Nicolas Cage Wears Nicolas Cage Meme T-Shirt To Guns N' Roses Concert

Nicolas Cage Macaulay Culkin Ryan Gosling Rita Ora Madonna

In what may be our favourite Instagram post of all time, rock band Guns N’ Roses have shared an image of Nicolas Cage…wearing Nicolas Cage. The band posted the image, which features the iconic actor wearing a cowboy hat, blue blazer, copious beads around his neck, a pair of sunglasses and…finest of all, a t-shirt featuring an image from one of his famous fan-made memes.

Nicolas Cage may be one of Hollywood’s most famous actors, but over the past few years it’s the collection of memes and fan videos dedicated to him which he’s become best-known for. Cage’s habit of totally surrendering himself, body and soul, to a role has led to a few onscreen outbursts which fans go freaking nuts for.

Nicolas Cage Wears His Own Meme As T-Shirt, Internet Applauds

Nicolas Cage

Praise Nicolas Cage. The actor is ridiculed on a daily basis thanks to his face's seemingly endless compatibility with just about every meme. However, at a Guns N' Roses concert last weekend, the Joe star decided show off his sense of humour by wearing a T-shirt with his own face on it.

US rockers Guns N' Roses posted a photo on their Instagram page over the weekend showing the actor hanging out backstage with the band and comedian Andrew Dice Clay after the Las Vegas show. Cage has gone for the bling, blazer and cowboy hat of GNR frontman Axl Rose, which would be enough to make us giggle but his rather unique T-shirt can be seen peeking out.

The particular cartoon on his shirt is commonly referred to as "You don't say?" and is a shot of the expression Cage makes in one scene of the film, Vampire's Kiss. The face is often used in online discussions as a sarcastic response to an obvious statement.

Is This The Best Nicolas Cage Prank Ever? [Pictures]

Nicolas Cage

Forget all the Nicolas Cage pranks you've ever read about. Forget the Wrecking Ball video. Forget, it all. All you really need to do for the next 10 minutes is relax, grab a coffee, and flick through the gallery below - for it contains one of the finest examples of sibling rivalry of all time.

Let me start by fleshing this one out a little: essentially this guy is on the hunt for revenge after his brother called Nicolas Cage a big "d-bag". He's obviously a big Nicolas Cage fan. Big enough to cut out 1000+ Nicolas Cage heads and plaster them around his stupid brother's house. These things are everywhere: in the ice trays, on the toilet paper, on ALL of the family photos, in EVERY pair of socks. Everything.

'Joe': The Redemption Of Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage is, without a doubt, one of the world’s greatest actors. There’s not many people that could argue with us when we say that, whatever their personal opinion of the eccentric star. The recipient of a Best Actor Academy Award in 1995 for his performance in Leaving Las Vegas, he has proved countless times that he is a seriously talented guy. As a member of the Coppola family it would be more of a surprise if he wasn’t.

nicolas cage redemption Nicolas Cage has starred in a number of flop films over the years

The problem is…he’s made some pretty bloody terrible films too. We still can’t bring ourselves to accept that Windtalkers really happened, while that accent in Captain Corelli’s Mandarin could rival Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. It’s that bad.

'Joe': Nicolas Cage Silences Haters With A Stand-Out Performance In Gritty Backwater Drama [Trailer]

Nicolas Cage Tye Sheridan David Gordon Green

Next week will see the release of new Nicolas Cage movie Joe in the USA, whilst the UK will have to wait a little bit longer. Before you greet that news with a groan and flashbacks to 2009's Knowing, hear this: with the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation Special Award and the Marcello Mastroianni Award from the 2013 Venice Film Festival under its belt, this gritty, David Gordon Green-directed drama is currently sitting at a delectable 84% on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Nicolas Cage Makes A Critically-Lauded Return To Form In The Dark & Doomy 'Joe.'

Cage takes centre-stage as the titular ex-convict who makes his living in a backwater town poisoning trees to make way for illegal logging companies. This is just a small part of the film however, as Joe's relationship with the 15 year-old Gary (Tye Sheridan) and his wranglings with Gary's abusive father (Gary Poulter) takes precedence in this dark and doomy tale.

Nicolas Cage Struggles With His Conscience In 'Joe' - [Trailer]

Nicolas Cage Tye Sheridan

Having spent the majority of his life in and out of prison due to violent episodes, Joe (Nicolas Cage) is finally on the straight and narrow with a steady job and a place to live. That is until young Gary (Tye Sheridan) comes along and asks him for a job. He then has to fight the urge to get involved in this kid’s life, which is easier said than done while his abusive father still reigns supreme.

The early hype surrounding this David Gordon Green–directed 'Joe' centres on Cage’s performance, which as been described as his best yet. It certainly is a departure from the action/black comedy stuff he’s been used to lately, and represents a change of pace for the oft joked-about actor.

Joe Ransom is an ex-convict who's been inside several times for his violent behaviour. Now trying to keep out of trouble, he takes on a new job - but going straight is more difficult than it first appears when he finds himself desperate to protect the people he cares about. He meets a 15-year-old boy named Gary, who's just moved into town with his family and is looking for a job. Joe agrees to take him on but soon discovers that he's not the only one struggling to get through life. After witnessing Gary's drunken father beating him, he's desperate to step in and help, but knows a confrontation will only lead to another lengthy stretch in jail. When Gary's family issues escalate, however, Joe can't help but lay his life down for that boy's family - but just how far will he take it this time?

'Joe' is a touching drama about redemption and the concept of right and wrong and is based on the 1991 novel of the same name by Larry Brown. It has been directed by David Gordon Green ('Eastbound & Down', 'Pineapple Express', 'George Washington') with a screenplay adapted by Gary Hawkins ('The Rough South of Harry Crews'). Having won the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation Special Award and the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the 2013 Venice Film Festival, 'Joe' is scheduled to be released in UK cinemas on July 25th 2014.

Stop Throwing Money At Adam Sandler, He's Officially The Most Overpaid Actor

Adam Sandler Reese Witherspoon Eddie Murphy Steve Carell Nicolas Cage Matt Damon

What we’ve assumed was true for a long time has now been confirmed: Adam Sandler is the most overpaid actor in the world, yielding the least amount of cash for the money he earns. Forbes, who did the maths and put everything into a handy list for everyone to peruse, bestowed the unwanted gong upon Hollywood's so called funnyman. But don’t worry there’s no awards ceremony for an achievement like this, just sarcastic news stories, a few memes and a big bag of Cheese Puffs for the list's #1.

Adam Sandler'Hey Sandler! you stink!' someone might have said once

So let’s look at some numbers: his last three films returned an average of $3.40 for every $1 he was paid. Last year, Natalie Portman earned $42.70 per dollar according to Forbes' most profitable actors list, just to give you some context.

Warning, Once You See Nicolas Cage In Miley Cyrus' Wrecking Ball, You Can't UNSEE It

Miley Cyrus Nicolas Cage

Miley Cyrus's 'Wrecking Ball' was always ripe for memes. It was almost too perfect for memes. Hannah Montana swinging naked on a demolition ball, crying her eyes out and licking a hammer? Pass the video editing software.

Anyway, someone went ahead and got to work on the new video, cutting and sticking poor old Nicolas Cage into the damn thing. Though the internet has given the creator of the gif a massive digital slap on the back, nobody really gets the Cage/Cyrus mash-up, though, perhaps we don't need to.

The meme first appeared on Buzzfeed, with the website dubbing it "terrifying." It's certainly pretty unsettling seeing Nicolas' Cage's head on Miley Cyrus's naked body.

Nicolas Cage Returns To Oscar Contention Status With 'Joe'

Nicolas Cage Tye Sheridan

Nicolas Cage is back flirting with the big acting awards following his most recent performance in the film Joe. In Joe, Cage plays a role not too dissimilar to his 1995 Oscar-winning performance as Ben Sanderson in Leaving Las Vegas, only this time Nic has taken a completely different approach to his method of acting, an approach that some critics claim has paid off in a big way.

Sandra Bullock plays a medical engineer sent into space with astronaut veteran George Clooney. With little experience in space, the engineer, Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock), is reliant on Matt Kowalsky (Clooney). From the trailer and IMDB description, Bullock is reliant on Clooney when they are caught in debris and forced to survive in space. Amazingly the drama unfolds with just two actors supported by the occasional NASA voice.

The Frozen Ground Trailer

Jack Halcombe is an Alaskan State Trooper who determinedly sets out to find a serial killer after several bodies of young girls show up apparently murdered. When he discovers a frightened young girl hiding away bound with handcuffs, he realises that she is their key to finding the killer being the only one to have managed to escape from his clutches. However, her information is in doubt given the fact that she is a prostitute and refused a polygraph. When he does find the suspect, it is Robert Hansen; an experience hunter and a bakery worker whose respected status leads many investigators to cross him off their list. Halcombe is unwavering in his suspicions, however, and sets out to gather solid evidence that Hansen is their man.

'The Frozen Ground': New Nicolas Cage Crime Movie Released To Mixed Reviews [Trailer]

Nicolas Cage Vanessa Hudgens John Cusack Radha Mitchell 50 Cent

Upcoming crime thriller The Frozen Ground is based on true events that culminated in a horrific serial killer being jailed to 461 years in prison in 1984 after the murder of 17 women. An adaptation of a chilling real-life story, the film starts with prostitute Cindy (Vanessa Hudgens) who narrowly escapes the clutches of serial killer and sexual predator Robert Hansen (John Cusack) but her story is disbelieved by the authorities. It is only when State Trooper Jack Halcombe (Nicolas Cage) becomes involved in the investigation that Cindy's account is investigated and Hansen is tracked down.

The Frozen Ground
Nicolas Cage To Star As State Trooper Jack Halcombe Who Tries To Solve The Crimes.

The Telegraph's Tim Robey disparages the film as unentertaining whilst badly and confusingly constructed yet does admit that former Disney teen princess Hudgens makes a "solid contribution" to the narrative, saying "she's tough and committed in ways that often come to the rescue." Cusack's killer is painted as a 2D villain, serving up "a listless banality-of-evil cipher instead of a character." The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw rates the film a little higher however, choosing to praise all three lead actor's performances as "solid" and Digital Spy attests - Cage's performance is "subtly" intense whilst the script is described as "smartly written." However, DS does admit that The Frozen Ground "misses the mark" with unconvincing roles from Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and Radha Mitchell, playing Cindy's pimp and Halcombe's wife respectively.

Nicolas Cage A "Highly Unlikely" Addition To Expendables 3

After being rumoured to be joining the Expendables 3 cast, Knowing actor Nicolas Cage has shot down such murmurings in an interview with Den of Geek putting it plainly that he'd had no involvement so far: "I have not had any formal discussions about that movie," he said referring to Expendables. "I'm not in Kick-Ass 2 and I don't think I'm in Expendables 3. And I like those guys, but I would say it would be highly unlikely that I'd be in that movie," he added, destroying another fervent internet rumour while he was at it.

The Frozen Ground Review

OK

Even though this crime thriller is based on a true story, it never feels remotely believable. The problem is that writer-director Walker tries far too hard to force the real events into a standard movie structure, which leaves gaping plot holes everywhere we look. Still, it's a solidly made film, with a snappy pace, strong performances and beefy direction that holds our attention.

It's set in 1983 Anchorage, Alaska, where the cops struggle to believe the story told to them by 17-year-old prostitute Cindy (Hudgens): she claims to have been kidnapped, tortured and raped, barely escaping with her life, and she identifies upstanding citizen Robert (Cusack) as her would-be killer. With the police refusing to follow up on her statement, State Trooper Jack (Cage) looks into it and discovers similarities in the cases of several other missing girls. And even though his out-of-hours investigation strains his marriage to Allie (Mitchell), he is doggedly determined to find the proof that will put Robert behind bars.

Right at the beginning we have a nagging question that's never answered: why do the police discount the victim's account, especially as it's accompanied by physical evidence? And the screenplay brushes past other big issues along the way, making us think that this might be the most inept police squad in the world. Although we never doubt for a second that Jack will crack the case, even though the script continually throws in random movie cliches from the characters' pasts in an attempt to ramp up the emotional stakes. It also randomly places Cindy in the middle of an under-developed war between two pimps (Jackson and Henke).

Lauryn Hill Begins Three Month Jail Term: Five Stars With Tax Problems

Lauryn Hill Fugees Wesley Snipes Nicolas Cage Martha Stewart Willie Nelson Richard Hatch

Lauryn Hill, the Grammy-winners singer whose only solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill remains a classic of its generation, has begun a three month prison term for failing to pay taxes of around $1 million between the years 2005 and 2007, reports the Independent.

The singer-songwriter will serve her time at a minimum security prison in Danbury, Connecticut where inmates live in dormitories and are expected to perform maintenance, landscape and serve food. Essentially, it's not really a prison.

The singer, who gained fame with The Fugees, always maintained that she was planning on paying the taxes but was unable when he dropped out of the music business. Before her sentencing, her lawyer said Lauryn had paid more than $970,000 of the owed cash.
