Actor Nicol Williamson Dies

Nicol Williamson

Scottish actor Nicol Williamson has died at the age of 73.

He passed away after losing his two-year battle with oesophageal cancer just before Christmas (11), his son Luke tells Britain's Daily Telegraph.

Williamson made his name in the John Osborne play Inadmissible Evidence, for which he won a Tony award in 1965, and was later described by the playwright as "the greatest actor since Marlon Brando".

He went on to star in TV shows and movies throughout the 1960s and into the 1980s, including fantasy film Excalibur, which he appeared in opposite former lover Dame Helen Mirren.

The Exorcist III Review

Excellent
Yeah, I know. It's a horror movie with a number after the title, which usually as promising a signal as "This film was not screened for critics." Well, if Evil Dead II is the horror sequel's Citizen Kane, then Exorcist III is its The Godfather.

Burdened with a disastrous prior sequel, E3 effectively rescues the franchise with earnest terror and dark wit. Writer and director William Peter Blatty, the man who scribed the novel and screenplay to the original Exorcist, completely ignores the heresy that was Exorcist II: The Heretic, and picks up 15 years after the first installment with a story loaded with dastardly twists, dreadful things that lurk just off-screen, and Brad Dourif.

The Exorcist III Review

Good
So we're not talking about great art here. But pound for pound, this second sequel to The Exorcist is one of the most frightening movies ever made. Largely set in an old hospital, we find that Father Damien may very well be alive and kicking in the depths of the mental ward -- and possibly possessed by the devil and with the power to possess others at will to do his bidding outside the confines of the straightjacket.

I'm Dancing As Fast As I Can Review

OK
Four years earlier she was An Unmarried Woman, now Jill Clayburgh returns to the screen in another oddly familiar role that would become synonymous with her career, as a woman struggling with the perils of modern life.

Here Clayburgh plays real-life TV producer Barbara Gordon, who was also a Valium addict. A spur of the moment decision leads her to quit, and after jitters and siezures she finally ends up near death, drying out in a rehab clinic. (If nothing else, Dancing enumerates exactly how awful Valium withdrawal can be -- as bad as heroin, so the film says.)

The Seven-Per-Cent Solution Review

OK
It's a silly gag -- Sherlock Holmes is addicted to cocaine and Watson tricks him into a visit with Sigmund Freud. Mysteries real and imagined ensue, with Siggy analyzing our messed-up hero while he investigates a rather tame kidnapping involving a snoozy Vanessa Redgrave. Only Alan Arkin and Robert Duvall -- both bizarrely cast as Freud and Watson, respectively -- make much of an impression. Still, it's quirky enough to have found a cult audience.

Black Widow Review

Weak
The grand dame of Lifetime-class "women's thrillers," Black Widow is both obvious (dig the title and try to figure out the plot -- Theresa Russell's the black widow; Debra Winger is the FBI agent hot on her tail!) and hopelessly dated (good lord, what's with Winger's hair?). Today, Widow is interesting as kitsch and camp and because poor Dennis Hopper is in it. Check it out next time it's on the WE network.
