Osbourne had criticised Minaj's 'Anaconda' artwork as "cheap" but had praised Kim Kardashian's nude selfies as "inspiring".
Nicki Minaj has branded ‘The X Factor’ judge Sharon Osbourne as a “hypocrite”, calling out her double standards in describing her ‘Anaconda’ artwork as “trashy” while praising Kim Kardashian’s nude selfies as “inspiring”.
The 33 year old rapper and performer condemned what she believes are double standards that black women face when it comes to nudity and beauty, highlighting that Osbourne called her 2014 single artwork for ‘Anaconda’ a “cheap porno cover of a DVD”, but calling Kim Kardashian’s internet-breaking series of nude selfies as “inspiring”.
“So it wasn't trashy and raunchy when a white woman did it but it was when a black woman did it?” she argued in her new cover feature for Marie Claire.
“When Kim Kardashian’s naked picture came out [Sharon Osbourne] praised it and my fans attacked her for being such a hypocrite... It’s quite pathetic and sad but that is my reality and I’ve gotten accustomed to just shutting it down.”
Kardashian’s nude selfies certainly didn’t have the whole world on her side – notable celebrities like Piers Morgan and Chloe Grace Moretz disapproved of its value to feminism – but the likes of Emily Ratajkowski and Osbourne herself took similar selfies in solidarity.
It’s not the first time that ‘Anaconda’ has been in headlines in recent times. Last year, Minaj complained when the single’s music video wasn’t nominated for the MTV VMAs video of the year, despite being so popular it sparked a wave of memes, parodies and even Halloween costumes.
“If I was a different ‘kind’ of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well…,” she tweeted in July 2015. “If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year.”
