Actress Nia Vardalos and rocker Slash were among the first stars who took to Twitter.com on Monday (03Oct11) to express their shock and joy after American student Amanda Knox was acquitted of murder in Italy.
Knox was sentenced to serve 26 years behind bars in 2009 for her part in the 2007 murder of her British roommate Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy, but the 24 year old and her ex-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, who was also jailed for the murder, appealed their convictions, and, on Monday, the pair was told they could walk free after a jury ruled the evidence against them wasn't solid enough to convict them.
The story has taken the world by storm, with Heroes star Hayden Panettiere portraying Knox in a TV movie earlier this year (11).
Now a number of celebrities, who have been following the case, have taken to social networking sites to express their shock at the ruling.
Slash wrote, "Congratulations to Amanda Knox & her family for their victory today," while My Big Fat Greek Wedding star Vardalos added, "Shouldn't type while crying. Happy to see Amanda Knox, Raffaelle Sollecito freed. Rip Meredith Kercher.”
Other stars weighing in on the case and the verdict included singer Nick Lachey, who wrote, "Congratulations to amanda knox and the knox family for the overturning of her guilty verdict in italy. What a relief it must be for them!!”
And actress Melissa Joan Hart added, "Such a relief to hear Amanda Knox & Raffaele will finally be free!!"
Knox is now expected to return home to Seattle, Washington within days.
