Larry Crowne Review

OK
A painfully squishy centre completely undoes this rom-com, although it's difficult to know what might have made it less goofy. The diminished dual star-wattage of Hanks and Roberts just about makes it watchable.

After being sacked for his lack of a degree, Larry (Hanks) enrols in a community college. There isn't much else going on in his life, so he dives into his studies: Mercedes (Roberts) teaches speech, while Dr Matsutani (Takei) teaches economics. When Larry downsizes to a scooter to save money, he befriends the cool scooter-riding Talia (Mbatha-Raw), who gives him a style makeover. He also joins her biker gang, led by her boyfriend Gordo (Valderrama). Meanwhile, Mercedes is struggling with her marriage to Dean (Cranston). So maybe she and Larry can help each other outside the classroom as well.

My Life In Ruins Review

Terrible
Nia Vardalos is the new Yakov Smirnoff. Her entire act revolves around her European heritage -- she's Greek, while Smirnoff's a Russkie. Without it, she's just another unemployable actress with a limited range. (See Connie and Carla, Vardalos' flat follow-up to her breakout hit, My Big Fat Greek Wedding.)

Her latest pseudo-comedy, My Life in Ruins, demonstrates that the tired Greek gags have taken her about as far as she's ever going to go. Even the characters in Vardalos' pictures are begging her to quit. "You're not funny. Stop trying," a manager tells self-absorbed tour guide Georgia (Vardalos) as she prepares to take a busload of imbecilic vacationers on a four-day Grecian jaunt.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding Review

Excellent
It's well known that Greeks are ethnocentric. Most of their men will probably brag within the first five minutes of being introduced that they are Greek -- as if you couldn't already tell from the greased hair, thick sideburns, leather jacket, cross around the neck, shirt wide open flaunting chest hair, and oversized gold ring with the Greek key. Greek women can also be easily recognized because they usually travel in packs, so if you meet Voula, Margarita, Thalia, and Zoe in the grocery store buying lamb shanks and phyllo dough, you can pretty much bet they're Greek. With such a strong presence from a proud people, it's a rare treat when a film comes along that satirizes such a unique and passionate culture.

Chicago, which is the setting for director Joel Zwick's My Big Fat Greek Wedding, seems to be a veritable Athens in America. While most urban "Greek Towns" are a dying breed, downtown Chicago is thriving with Greek diners, clubs, and cafes. The story begins at The Dancing Zorba, a diner owned by the Portokalos family. Toula (Nia Vardalos) starts out as a depressed and portly thirty year-old that works as a hostess for her parents. Trapped at the restaurant by her stubborn Greek father (Michael Constantine), who believes that a woman's role in the world is to breed Greek children and cook, her life changes when she becomes smitten with the non-Greek Ian Miller (John Corbett). She decides that she needs to go to school, lose the tacky glasses, and put on a little makeup in order to take control of her life. With the blessing of her mother (Lainie Kazan), Toula transforms herself into an attractive and brazen woman worthy of Ian's interest. But how can she convince her family that Ian is right for her? Her father considers any non-Greek a "xenos," a foreigner, and worse, Ian is a longhaired vegetarian.

Connie And Carla Review

Weak
In Connie and Carla, two women find that disguising themselves as male cross-dressers is the only way their show can draw an audience. The premise is strikingly similar to Victor/Victoria, with My Big Fat Greek Wedding's Nia Vardalos as the singing and dancing lead character. Unlike its much better predecessor, C and C is a sluggish and unfunny mess where its gaiety gets lost in an unneeded, heavy-handed melodrama.

Ever since they were kids, best friends Connie (Vardalos) and Carla (Toni Collette) dreamed their two-woman show would take them places. When we first meet the duo, they're not performing in Chicago's dinner theaters; instead their venue is the dismal O'Hare Airport lounge, where they perform for sleeping travelers. After they witness the murder of their boss, by small time gangster Mr. Rudy (Robert John Burke), Connie and Carla pack their bags and escape to a "cultureless" place where Rudy can never find them: Los Angeles.

Connie & Carla Review

OK

Its plot is "Some Like It Hot" meets "Victor/Victoria" and it's not half as clever as either, but "Connie and Carla" -- Nia Vardalos' writing-starring follow-up to "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" -- earns its share of amused grins for campy show tunes and cross-dressing gags.

Vardalos and Toni Collette ("The Sixth Sense," "About a Boy") play corny showgirl wannabes from the Midwest who equate doing dinner theater with hitting the big time. But while enthusiastically belting out over-costumed clinkers at a half-empty airport lounge, they inadvertently witness a murder and are forced to run for their lives from a vicious drug dealer (Robert John Burke).

Panicking about where to hide, they decide to find "someplace where there's no theater, no musical theater, no dinner theater. No culture at all!"
