Zara Phillips And Team Gb Settle For Silver In Equestrian Team Event
Zara Phillips is one of five members of Team GB's equestrian eventing team at London's 2012 Olympics. Today, the team were hoping to bring home gold. If they had been successful, it would have been the first time in 40 years that a British team have managed to win an Olympic gold medal in this event. Yesterday, Zara was watched by fellow members of the Royal Family, including her cousins Prince Harry and Prince William and her mother, Princess Anne. However, victory was snatched from them by the German team, who retained their Olympic title.
The team entered the final day of the competition in second position. Zara received a roar of applause as she and her team-mates entered the show-jumping arena, keen to topple Germany from their prime position. In yesterday's show-jumping rounds, Zara suffered disappointment, as she and her horse, High Kingdom, incurred seven penalty points and finished slightly after the allotted time limit. Speaking to commentators after she had competed, Zara said "I just had to get on with it [after the second fence went down]. Unfortunately that happens but he [her horse High Kingdom] jumps magnificently and he lost two shoes yesterday."
Zara Phillips' Team GB had to settle for the silver medal. It's still a fantastic achievement of course, but no doubt a disappointment for the royal who would have been so keen to emerge victorious, on home soil, in front of her family, the British monarchy. As New Zealand and Great Britain's riders battled it out for silver and bronze, the crowd in London went wild for their home team. As Kristina Cook finished her round, the home crowd rejoiced, with Prince William and Kate Middleton clapping enthusiastically in the stands.
