Zach Galifianakis: Punching Babies Integral To Winning Elections

Zach Galifianakis is getting political. He's on the promotional trail for his latest movie, The Campaign (which also stars Will Ferrell) and the funny man has told New York Daily News that although the movie takes a light-hearted look at the life of election campaigners, he does take politics pretty seriously and wants the movie to prick the conscience of the US political system. "We really wanted to highlight the ridiculousness that politics has descended into," said Galifianakis. "Whether you are on the right or the left, everyone can agree that there are a lot of outside influences in American politics that are not good for the system. There's just too much money."

When it comes to Galifianakis having designs on a political career of his own, though, it's a pretty resounding 'no.' "I'm not versed enough in constitutional law to run for office," he explains, before adding "I'd have to go back to school or something. Plus, I'm not willing to punch a baby in the face to win an election, which is pretty much required these days." It's a reference to a scene in the movie, in which Congressman Cam Brady, played by Will Ferrell, takes a swing at Marty Huggins, played by Zach, but accidentally hits a baby.

The Campaign, which was released on August 4 in the US is a comic tale of two CEOs trying to oust their long-term congressman Cam Brady, by entering a rival candidate. That man is Marty Huggins, the director of the local tourist centre.
