Youtube To Begin Streaming Movies From Major Studios

YouTube plans to launch a movie streaming rental service with three major studios next month, published reports said today (Tuesday). The Google-owned website, which accounts for most online video accesses, will be providing new DVD releases online for as little as $2, although it has agreed to allow the studios, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., and Universal, to set the pricing for individual movies, the reports suggested. Licensing negotiations are reportedly continuing to take place between YouTube and the other three "majors," Paramount, 20th Century Fox, and Disney. News of the deal, first reported by Sharon Waxman's TheWrap.com, came as little surprise to most industry watchers. Since early last year, YouTube has been licensing hundreds, if not thousands, of independent movies and offering them on a pay-as-you-go basis. Its chief competitor, Netflix, has been offering mostly older movies from the major studios for online streaming as part of its monthly subscription services.
