You Asked For It Host Dies
JACK SMITH, a singer and recording artist who hosted the popular US show YOU ASKED FOR IT, has died. He was 92. Smith died of leukaemia on 3 July (06) at his home in Westlake Village, California, according to his longtime friend DORRIS HALSEY. Smith began a singing career in the early 1930s and worked for many years in radio. He is best known as the host of the US ABC series You Asked For it in its final season in 1958 and returned for the syndicated version of the show from 1971-1972 and appeared occasionally until 1977. He earned the nickname of "Smiling" Jack Smith after performing on THE PRUDENTIAL HOUR, a popular music show on CBS, when fans commented it sounded as though he was smiling when he sang. In 1945, he hosted his own radio show on CBS which continued into the early 1950s. It included DINAH SHORE, MARGARET WHITING and GINNY SIMMS. Smith's wife of 67 years, VICTORIA, died in 2003. He has no immediate survivors. At his request, there will be no funeral service.
