Woman's Hour Jenni Murray Diagnosed With Cancer

by | 21 December 2006

Jenni Murray, the presenter of BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 56-year-old broadcaster told listeners this morning of the recent diagnosis.

"I shall not be around for a while in the new year as I've just been diagnosed with breast cancer," she said.

"I've known about the diagnosis for a couple of weeks now, it was diagnosed up in Macclesfield when I was on my holidays."

Ms Murray will undergo an operation between Christmas and the new year and will then receive appropriate treatment.

She is remaining upbeat about the process, telling listeners: "Treatments are very good these days and I know quite a bit about this disease thanks to working on the programme... fingers crossed, everything should be alright."

Ms Murray has worked on Woman's Hour since 1987. She was born in Barnsley in 1950, just four years after the programme hit airwaves.

In 1999 she was made an OBE for radio broadcasting in the Queen's birthday honours.
