It cost about $2.8 million dollars to produce MGM's The Wizard Of Oz back in 1939 -- a huge budget for its day. But Warner Bros., which now owns the rights to the movie, is spending nearly ten times that amount simply to market a home-video version of the movie to celebrate its 75th anniversary, according to published reports. The film, which has been reprocessed for , will get a send-off at Hollywood's Grauman's Chinese Theater, where it premiered on Aug. 15, 1939. The theater, now called the TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX, will be one of some 300 IMAX theaters that have been lined up for the one-week engagement. Promotions include everything from McDonald's Happy Meals toys to asparagus tagged with the movie's title.
The album is the first in history to chart without selling a single copy.
