Witching Hour Comes Early In Australia
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 obliterated box-office records in Australia as it opened with $7.44 million, a whopping 32 percent above the previous record holder, Lord Of The Rings Return of the King. , which collected $5.63 million during its debut in 2003. (Although the movie is opening in numerous foreign markets on the same date as it is in the U.S., Australia is one day ahead of the U.S. and Europe.) The film opened on 753 screens, making it the widest opening in Australian history. Its per-theater average of $9,882 is also the best take for any wide opening in the country. (Reports did not indicate what percentage of the theaters had screened it in 3D.) In a statement, Joel Pearlman, managing director of Roadshow Films, which is distributing the Potter finale in Australia, said "These incredible results are a Testament to the incredible achievement of the filmmakers, cast, and, of course, J.K. Rowling, and should ensure the film series' place in history for years to come." Meanwhile, some U.S. forecasters are predicting that the film will perform equally strongly in the U.S., with some saying it could open with as much as $165 million.
