Winstone To Play Ian Dury's Dad In Punk Biopic

by | 23 April 2009

Brit actor RAY WINSTONE has signed up to play the father of punk legend IAN DURY in the forthcoming biopic SEX & DRUGS & ROCK & ROLL.

The COLD MOUNTAIN and BEOWULF star will join THE OFFICE funny man MACKENZIE CROOK, LORD OF THE RINGS actor ANDY SERKIS and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN actress NAOMIE HARRIS in the film, which has a predominantly British cast.

NOEL CLARKE, TOBY JONES and BILL MILNER will also co-star.

It was previously reported that Serkis, best known for being the actor behind Gollum in the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, will play the lead role of THE BLOCKHEADS frontman Dury, who was afflicted by polio, while Naomie will play his girlfriend.

The rest of the band will be played by ARTHUR DARVILL, JAMES JAGGER, TOM HUGHES, SHAKRAJ SOORNACK, CLIFFORD SAMUEL and JOE KENNEDY.

Paul Viragh has written the script and Mat Whitecross will helm the project, which is set for release next year and will mark the tenth anniversary of Dury's death from cancer.

Dury's band THE BLOCKHEADS had a string of successful tracks, including HIT ME WITH YOUR RHYTHM STICK and, of course, SEX & DRUGS & ROCK & ROLL, which the movie is named after.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Winstone had landed a role in William Monahan's gangster flick LONDON BOULEVARD.

He joins COLIN FARRELL, ANNA FRIEL and KEIRA KNIGHTLEY, playing the latter's love interest who has been recently released from prison.

The film will begin shooting this summer in London and marks the second time Keira and Winstone have shared the big screen, following 2004's KING ARTHUR.
