But Annie Lennox and Grace Jones both look like men! Why can a woman only be empowered if she has a body like a man's? I'm not saying that Rihanna is "empowering" (I think that word is too often mis-used) but I certainly don't think it's empowering for women to be given role models whose bodies they cannot naturally duplicate; a woman's body is (typically) a specific shape for reproductive reasons. That men have taken and fetishised that shape during previous eras (i.e, the emphasis on a small waist/large hips, etc) is none of women's concern. By removing a natural feminine shape, you do not automatically empower women - on the contrary, you sublimate them by not allowing them the expression of their natural form.
