Will Smith’s Son Jayden Wants His Own Gaff… At 15-Years-Old
Here's some parenting advice from The Fresh Prince
There are certain things you can do at certain ages. If you’re Jewish, you become a man at 13. If you’re into gambling, drinking and smoking, you’ll have to look up the various state age-restrictions on those because we can’t be bothered.
For Jayden Smith – son of Will – 15-years-old sounds about right for a nice pad of his own. Will Senior, 44, reveals to The Sun: “He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated.’ I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place, like ooh. That’s the backlash. On the other side, if kids just want to have command of their lives, I understand.”
Will and Jayden star in the post-apocalyptic film adventure After Earth, and, like in real life, Jayden has to prove to his father that he’s capable. “It’s very similar for Jaden and me — your father’s the biggest movie star in the world, and you’re struggling for your little piece of dignity in this extreme shadow.” We’re guessing Jaden won’t be learning any modesty in that family, then.
“We generally don’t believe in punishment. From the time Jaden was five or six we would sit him down, and all he has to do is be able to explain why what he did was the right thing for his life,” explained Will on parenting a future star. “I think it’s a much more difficult question to ask someone — ‘Why was that right?’ — than to try to show them why it was wrong."
