Whitney Houston - Whitney Houston Was Crazy According To A Friend

Whitney Houston was ''vibrant'' and ''crazy'' according to her Grammy Award-winning gospel singer friend BeBe Winans.

In 'The Whitney I Knew', published later this month, the 49-year-old friend relives some of their moments together.

He told The Sun newspaper: ''I remember I went to see the 'Prince Of Tides' with her in the early Nineties. Near the end of the movie the woman sitting in front of Whitney turned around and said, 'Can you shut up please?'

''Whitney grabbed the woman's blonde ponytail and said, 'You shouldn't be so rude'. Then she pushed her head forward.''

He continued: ''The woman stood up and screamed and her boyfriend stood up like he was getting ready to fight. We grabbed Whitney and bolted out of the theatre.

''Whitney was laughing and saying, 'That was so much fun!' I wasn't surprised at all because I knew exactly the sort of person she was. She could stand her ground. She didn't need a bodyguard!

He added: ''She was unruly and she was vibrant and she was crazy -- she was honest to who she was.''

BeBe believes if she had been shielded better from the demands of fame, she may not have had her life blighted by drug addiction.

BeBe said: ''I can't say that Whitney's trouble with drugs or anything else were caused by the stress of fame. I can't say that, but we can assume that.

''If you allow that stress to enter your life and to remain there, it can lead you to do things that you never thought you would ever do.''

Angela Bassett To Make Best Of Whitney Houston Biopic, Despite Protests 4299635 News

The Whitney Houston Lifetime biopic is going ahead as planned, but the singer’s family is not happy about it. Cissy Houston, mother of the late singer, issued a statement this Wednesday, distancing herself and the family from the film, which she considers poorly researched and disrespectful to the musical icon’s memory.

In a statement issued to Entertainment Tonight, Cissy Houston said: “No one connected with this movie knew Whitney or anything about her relationship with Bobby. In the two years since Whitney's death, many people have stepped forward to speak about their close relationship with her. I find it difficult to believe people who knew and supposedly loved her would participate in a movie about her done by folks who didn't know her.”

However, Cissy’s comment isn’t entirely accurate. In fact, of the team working on the biopic, two people have previously worked with Houston. One is director Angela Bassett, who co-starred with Houston in the 1995 film Waiting to Exhale. The second – Deborah Cox, who is recording vocals for the film, after Lifetime failed to secure the rights to Houston’s original recordings. Cox also collaborated with Houston on the 2000 track Same Script, Different Cast.

Angela Bassett, Paley Fest
Director Angela Bassett recently made a pledge to stay faithful to Houston's story.

All this doesn’t necessarily invalidate the Houston family’s concern about the authenticity of Whitney’s story. However, Bassett has previously expressed her personal commitment to staying true to the late singer’s legacy.

So, What Do We Know About Lifetime’s Whitney Houston Biopic? 4288171 News

Lifetime’s upcoming Whitney Houston biopic appears to be moving forward, with the announcement that Arlen Escarpeta has been cast as Bobby Brown. But despite the fact filming has just begun the movie is already being seen as controversial, with the late singer’s family voicing their objections. So what do we know already about the film and what aspects of Houston’s life can we expect it to focus on?

Yaya DaCosta as Whitey HoustonYaya DaCosta in character as Whitey Houston

The Cast

Former ‘America’s Next Top Model’ contestant Yaya DaCosta has been cast in the lead role as the troubled singer. The 31 year old switched careers from modelling to acting back in 2005 and has so far appeared in films such as Tron Legacy and The Butler. But DaCosta wont be rerecording any of Houston’s famous hits. Instead singer Deborah Cox will attempt to mimic Houston’s trademark vocals for the soundtrack. Also cast is Brotherhood actor Arlen Escarpeta who will star as Houston’s former husband Bobby Brown, while veteran Mark Rolston will play the singer’s mentor Clive Davis.

The Crew

Interestingly the film will be directed by Houston’s Waiting To Exhale co-star Angela Bassett. While Bassett has no prior directing credits to her name, she does have plenty of experience with biopics, having previously played Tina Turner, Rosa Parks and Katherine Jackson, among others. Speaking about her directorial debut, Bassett has said, “I have such regard for both Whitney's and Bobby's amazing talents and accomplishments; and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story.” Three time Emmy nominee Larry Sanitsky is on board as executive producer, while Shem Bitterman has written the screenplay.

And these are the words and this is the place, and these are the people on the outside, you know? And I want to be as honest as I can about doing that.” Adding, “Well, we know that drugs were a part of their story and that's certainly an element of their story. We can't tell their story without that. It's involved, and I hope we can unpack it gently."

Deborah Cox To Sing Whitney Houston’s Hits As Lifetime Biopic Takes Shape 4287190 News

Production is well underway on Lifetime's upcoming Whitney Houston biopic, which will feature some of the late singing legend's music. However, the songs will be retakes of Houston's hit tracks with Deborah Cox providing the vocals to Yaya Dacosta's acting abilities.

The former America's Next Top Model hopeful is playing Hosuton in the Angela Bassett-directed film but seemingly has been selected for her uncanny physical similarity to Houston rather than her voice match. Therefore, Cox will be singing the "vocal tracks" although "music rights and clearances are still being worked out," according to a Lifetime rep, via E!.

Bassett, who co-starred with Houston in Waiting to Exhale, is making her directorial debut with the Lifetime original movie about the singer, who died in 2007. In particular, the biopic will reportedly focus on Houston's relationship with Bobby Brown, who will be played by Arlen Escarpeta.

Though the film isn't expected to premiere until next year, Lifetime have already released the first photo of DaCosta as Houston and Escarpeta as the former New Edition singer. The snap has simultaneously promoted the upcoming biopic whilst reassuring Houston fans that the production is in the right hands.

Bobby Brown Allowed To Pursue Defamation Suit Over Whitney Houston Affair Allegations 4143503 News

Former R&B bad boy Bobby Brown has been given the go-ahead to pursue legal action against the editors of a U.S. tabloid over allegations they printed suggesting he was involved in an affair with his ex-wife Whitney Houston prior to her death.

The New Edition star filed a defamation suit against National Enquirer bosses in New York last year (Mar13) over a 2012 article which suggested he was planning to re-marry the I Will Always Love You hitmaker after rekindling their romance, despite the fact that he was dating his now-wife Alicia Etheridge at the time.

The story was published just six weeks after the tragic superstar was found dead in her hotel room in Beverly Hills, California.

Defendants at the Enquirer's parent company, American Media, claimed they could no longer be sued as the year-long statute of limitations had expired two days before the 25 March, 2013 filing, but U.S. District Judge Paul Oetken rejected the motion as an online version of the story had been published on 26 March, 2012.

Rita Ora: My new song is like Whitney Houston 4124282 News

Rita Ora has likened her new single to Whitney Houston.

The 23-year-old singer will launch her second studio album with comeback track 'I Will Never Let You Down' - which was produced by her boyfriend Calvin Harris - and she claims the song is reminiscent of some of the late 'I Will Always Love You' legend's earlier work.

She explained: '''I Will Never Let You Down' is obviously a very important song to me because it's a love song, but it reminds you of Whitney, and that was the vibe we were on. We just wanted to feel good. You know that feeling of 'How Will I Know' with the synth? It just makes you feel happy ... that's what I wanted to create.''

Rita also confirmed she has collaborated with 'Thrift Shop' hitmaker Macklemore on her new album.

She gushed to Paper magazine: ''We have this amazing song, 'Young Dreamers' with Macklemore and it's so cool. It's for the kids, and it's liberating and so fun.''

The 'R.I.P.' hitmaker is determined to crack America with her new album, but admits she is ''scared'' about taking on the challenge.

She added: ''Conquering America for a UK artist is incredible because that's what everybody wants and dreams about. The accomplishment is dominating a market which you aren't familiar with. I am a bit nervous. I am a bit scared, I'll be honest.''

Whitney Houston wanted daughter to marry 'brother' 4047088 News

Bobbi Kristina Brown claims Whitney Houston wanted her to marry Nick Gordon.

The late 'I Will Always Love You' singer's daughter announced she had secretly married her fiancé earlier this month, and says her mother - who died of accidental drowning in 2012 - would have supported the union, even though Nick was raised as her stepbrother.

Speaking on US TV's 'Extra', Bobbi, 20, said: ''She wanted this. This is something she wanted to see.''

Nick added: ''[Whitney] just treated me like she gave birth to me. She treated me like a son. She made me promise several times to look after Krissy ... and Mom, I will never, ever, ever break that promise.''

Nick, now in his 20s, was taken in by Whitney when his mother could no longer care for him, before he was a teenager. He was never officially adopted by the star and he and Bobbi - whose father is singer Bobby Brown - have no blood relatives.

Nick explained: ''Me calling [Whitney] mom, this where everybody gets the ['brother and sister' thing from].

''We were young. Krissy looked at me as an older brother, and I looked at her as a little sister.''

Romance between the pair blossomed after Whitney's death, and the couple claim negative reaction to their relationship only made them stronger.

Bobbi Kristina said: ''It lit a fire up under our ass and we went hauling.'' Nick added: ''The critics can say whatever they want to say ... it's like we have a force field and that s**t's just bouncing off of it.''

Bobbi Kristina Brown & Nick Gordon Marry In Secret? 4017622 News

Bobbi Kristina Brown, the daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, may well have married her fiancé Nick Gordon in a secret ceremony. 20-year-old Brown tweeted on Thursday (9th January) a picture of her and her new husband's wedding rings with their hands overlapping, adding the caption "happily married." She tagged Gordon in her post and added "So in love. If you didn't get it the first time that is."

There was some speculation regarding the nature of their relationship. Gordon is the son of an unnamed friend of Houston and Bobby Brown's and he was brought up, through his teens, in the same household as Bobbi. Houston, according to sources speaking to ABC, had been overheard saying Gordon was like her son. A number of critics attacked Brown and Gordon, claiming they were related.

The couple first announced their engagement in October 2012 during an advertisement for their reality show The Houstons: On Our Own. They called off their engagement sometime later owing to the concerns from Brown's family. However, they announced their relationship was back on in July 2013. Brown was keen to address the issue of their sibling status or rather lack thereof. She wrote on Facebook: "I'm tired of hearing people say 'eww you're engaged to your brother,'" adding "We aren't even real brother and sister nor is he my adoptive brother. My mom never adopted him."

Brown also hinted she has some other news, on Twitter she wrote there are "big things in store," adding "We're about to change the world!" Whatever this news is, fans of the happy couple will have to wait for this and official confirmation on the possible secret wedding.

Drake Releases 'Nothing Was The Same': Another Strong Rap Album For 2013? 3880786 News

Three albums in and Drake has firmly found his place within the rap world. Not only does his latest record, Nothing Was The Same, deliver a self-assured sound and confident lyrics but it also marks a turning point for the rapper as he looks back and muses upon his rise to fame.

Drake Delivers A Solid Third Effort.

The album's lead single 'Started From The Bottom' is the most obvious rags-to-riches tune. Suitably anthemic for radio, the rap delivers some incisive lyrics about fame and fortune and has also had a rather funny music video released alongside.

First track, 'Tuscan Leather,' certainly signifies a more aggressive Drake, laced with Whitney Houston samples. "Comin' off the last record, I'm getting' 20 million off the record/Just to off these records, n**ga that's a record/I'm tired of hearin' 'bout who you checkin' for now/Just give it time, we'll see who's still around a decade from now," raps Drake authoritatively.

Track 10, 'The Language,' is another chest-beating piece as Drake spits venom in a classic diss: "I don't know why they been lying but your s**t is not that inspiring/ F**k any n**ga that's talking that s**t to get a reaction/ F**k going platinum, I looked at my wrist and it's already platinum/I am the kid with the motor mouth."

Incisive, Authoritative, Often Vicious: Nothing Was The Same Doesn't Let Up On Its Confident Sound.

Houston's isn't the only guest voice on the album; after OVO Fest Drake showed that he had the ability to rally an impressive team of artists to perform and this aspect is maintained on NWTS. Jay Z, PartyNextDoor, the Wu Tang Clan, DJ Dahi, Hudson Mohawke, Jheno Aiko, Sampha and Boi-1da all feature as samples or as production thanks.

'Too Much' represents a more emotionally-rooted rap, rather than trying to be a diss-track. With the calming voice of Sampha sampled, Drake laments the effect that fame has had upon his connections with his family.

Drake's Third Album Has Earned Critical Praise.

The last track, 'Pound Cake,' is one of the obvious draws on the album. Featuring Jay Z, thedecision to list the song last on the record could be a sign that there are bigger things to come, perhaps. 'Pound Cake' doesn't let up on the conviction as the album draws to a close, nor does it allow guest rapper Jay Z to have the final word. With so many quality rap albums released this summer, Drake isn't about to lose sight of his spotlight and let someone else have the parting shot.

Billboard rates the record highly, as a steadfast effort that doesn't stretch the 26 year-old too far out of his comfort zone, saying Drake's found "a place where he's most comfortable, with insatiability pumping through his veins for the sole purpose of self-improvement."

Some listeners may feel like they're having to over-exert themselves to find any hummable content on the album and some may miss the more obvious playfulness of his previous efforts.

Nevertheless, Nothing Was The Same manages to keep its sound fresh and engaging, weaving in some food-for-thought kind of sentiments in the lyrics as it goes. As XXL Mag states, "Like it or not, he's the new voice of a generation with a mission to stay ahead of the curve."
