Whitney Houston Movie Fails To Sparkle Brightly At The Box Office
According to the movie's distributors, TriStar Pictures and Sony, it was released on 2,244 screens and grossed $4.5 million on its opening date on Friday, August 17th 2012 with the figures dropping to $4.3 million the following day. With new figures emerging today (August 20th), 'Sparkle' is expected to reach number 5 in the box office with 'The Expendables 2', 'The Bourne legacy', 'ParaNorman' and 'The Campaign' overtaking them in the respective first, second, third and fourth positions. It doesn't necessarily mean it won't become a huge hit in the future, like the late Houston's 1996 film 'The Preacher's Wife' which made $7.6 million to begin with but went on to gross an impressive $48 million.
The singer plays the part of the overbearing mother in the musical flick, starring former 'American Idol' winner Jordin Sparks, who has overcome a lifelong battle with various demons in her life. Her daughters form a girl group behind her back determined to burst on to the Detroit music scene despite their mother's warnings. Houston and her character have been strongly compared to each other given their similar life struggles. It serves as an eerie reminder that you can't always beat the demons, with Ms Houston passing away in February following the film's production due to a cocaine related incident.
