White Lies Come Second In Bbc's Sound Of 2009 List

by | 08 January 2009

West London trio White Lies have been named in second place in the BBC's Sound of 2009 list, predicting the biggest musical acts of the next year.

Adele topped the list last year, and her successor as the next big thing will be announced on Friday January 9th.

Each of the top five have been announced on a daily basis this week, with White Lies finishing ahead of - in reverse order - La Roux, Empire of the Sun and Florence and the Machine.

The three-piece, from Ealing and Shepherd's Bush, were the subject of a record company bidding war last year and are sceptical about lists such as the Sound of 2009 rundown.

"I don't think there really should be lists that predict people's success," said bassist and lyricist Charles Cave.

"I think we'd all rather turn up next year and win a bunch of awards for the album that we've made."

Cave, singer Harry McVeigh and drummer Jack Lawrence-Brown are renowned for their gloomy, morbid sound and have been compared to the likes of Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen.

However, McVeigh believes the comparison is incorrect as "in most of the songs the chorus is up an octave".

"There are some songs which I actually struggle to sing, because they're so high. But people pick up on the fact that a lot of the verses are very low and deep," he told the BBC.

White Lies' debut album To Lose My Life is released on January 19th.
