Whitaker Revealed Past With Film Role
The star, who plays Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in the biopic, spent three years researching his family tree before he landed the role.
Whitaker was so determined to find his ancestors, he had a DNA test to discover which African tribes he is descended from, and studied the movement of slaves from the corresponding regions with the help of shipping logs for further insight.
He says, "(Getting the part of Amin) was a big deal for me. Big deal.
"This movie came at a perfect time. It gave me a sense of myself. It helped me understand colonialism in a more organic way, and it helped me explore my ancestry."
