Richard Griffiths - West End's Lights Dim For Richard Griffiths

The lights of London's West End theatre district were dimmed on Tuesday night (02Apr13) in honour of British actor Richard Griffiths, who died last week (ends31Mar13).

The Harry Potter star, 65, passed away on 28 March (13) after suffering complications following heart surgery at University Hospital in Coventry, England.

Bosses of theatres across London turned down their lights on Tuesday to pay tribute to Griffiths, who performed in a string of London shows - including last year's (12) revival of The Sunshine Boys.

Alex Jennings, who starred with the actor in a 2009 production of Alan Bennett's The Habit of Art, fought back tears after his performance in the Untold Stories show as he told the audience: "Richard Griffiths is irreplaceable."

Actor Russell Tovey was in the audience and cried at the tribute to his The History Boys co-star, telling the London Evening Standard, "It was such a respectful performance. That he's gone, it's like a cog on the wheel is not there any more."

Mark Rubinstein, president of the Society of London Theatre which organised the light tribute, insisted it was "fitting" to honour "a fine actor who made such a significant and lasting contribution to our London stages".
