Wembley Hosts First Concert In Seven Years

George Michael has become the first singer to perform at the rebuilt £757 million Wembley stadium.

Last night's gig was the first concert at the renowned sporting and entertainment venue since it was closed for redevelopment seven years ago.

Michael, 43, entertained the 90,000 sell-out crowd with hits from his time in the band, Wham!, as well as with songs from his solo career.

Before going onstage, the singer spoke about performing at Wembley. "It's an amazing honour because I have felt a huge association with Wembley from when I was a child," he said.

Michael appeared before Brent magistrates court a few days ago where he was sentenced to 100 hours of community service for driving while unfit and banned from driving for two years.

Celebrities who attended the show included former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell and TV presenters Claire Sweeney and June Sarpong.

The venue will play host to two special concerts this year: Concert for Diana, featuring Sir Elton John and Duran Duran, and Live Earth, with names such as Madonna and Red Hot Chili Peppers scheduled to perform.
Rock bands Muse and Metallica will also perform at Wembley this summer.
