Weekend Box Office Rises 12 Percent Above Last Year

With a slate of debuting films performing at the high end of expectations or above and last week's top film dropping only 25 percent in its third week, the weekend box office wound up 12 percent above its total for the same weekend a year ago. The easy winner was Relativity Media's Immortals , which grossed $32.21 million. Visually stunning, according to critics, who otherwise panned the movie, 3D screenings accounted for two-thirds of the film's gross. In second place was the Adam Sandler comedy Jack and Jill , which nabbed $25 million despite virtually unanimous critical castigation. The Sony/Columbia comedy narrowly beat out the third week of Paramount/DreamWorks Animation's Puss in Boots , which earned $24.73 million and drove it past the $100-million mark to $108.04 million. (Also charging across that mark was Paramount's micro-budgeted Paranormal Activity 3 , which earned $3.61 million to bring its four-week total to $100.81 million.) Universal's Tower Heist declined 47 percent in its second week, winding up with $12.77 million and placing fourth. Opening in fifth place in fewer than 2,000 theaters was Warner Bros.' J. Edgar , which took in $11.22 million.
