Watson: 'I Wanted To Die'

British opera singer Russell Watson was so traumatised throughout his brain tumour ordeal, he wished for death to end his suffering.

The 41-year-old tenor fell ill during a recording session in October (07) and underwent emergency surgery after doctors discovered he had fallen victim to a second tumour - just a year after his first operation to remove a growth from his brain.

And Watson admits that when he was rushed to hospital before the second operation, he wanted to die to ease his pain.

He says, "All I wanted to do was drift off to sleep. I was convinced my time had come and I was going to die. I was so close to death I just thought, 'Come on. Bring it on. I've had enough.'

"I didn't want to go through all that s** again. I'd had enough. Lights out. Game over."

But it was the thought of his young daughters that persuaded Watson not to give up.

He adds, "I started thinking about my kids, I thought, 'What are they going to do without their dad?' I suddenly thought, 'No! F**k this! I'm not ready to die. I will fight this!'"

Watson made a good recovery after the surgery and has now finished a course of chemotherapy. He has two daughters Rebecca, 13, and Hannah, seven, from his marriage to Helen Watson which ended in 2001.

I don't usually do this sort of thing but having been through surgery for a brain tumour twice in the last 18 months and had radiotherapy I would like to say "good on you Russell, keep up the singing, I love it and think you are an inspiration to anyone who has or has had a brain tumour". More importantly I would like to send a message to David. The second op is certainly more scarey than the first but it's been good for me and must have been good for Russell. If you want any inspiration a young man called David Bailey, who was given just months to live 12 years ago, is telling his story and performing his songs as part of Brain Tumour Awareness week. You can find the details on www.SDBTT.co.uk or phone 0845 130 9733. They are an incredibly supportive group who also help with finding and giving information to anyone who has a brain tumour, their friends and families and fund lots of research.I wish you all the best and hope this might help you.Best wishes. Hi,I also know David and it is such a shame that he has been too scared to have his tumour removed, he is such a lovely young boy and really needs to be convinced that now a days surgery is alot more advanced and that he has his whole life ahead of him. So please if you can help that would be great.Thankyou.

HiI am a fan of Russell Watson, what a brave man he is, I'd like him to do a favour for a friends son aged 16, who also has a Brian Tumour, been removed once, but grown again, and soo scared. He is only 16, his name is David, he should have had his op today .. 15 July 2008, but refused it. Please Russell, can you contact this family, and make David see it can be successful, and you are living proff! The doctors have said he has at most 2 Years to live!. I can be contacted for his fathers E'Mail address if you are willing, he has his whole life ahead of him, if he can be convinced by a like minded person as yourself X Please, can someone reply?JacquiUK

Dot, give the guy a break! Have you ever been face-to-face with death? They are just words and they weren't directed at you.

It brought saddened surprise to even contemplate that the clean-cut Russell Watson would let the use of inappropriate language scar his image! I am a grandmother who has praised his work highly with my grandsons. They have listened to his music daily as we traveled home from school. I have followed his music and his story, and have prayed continuously for his recovery. The language - the s-- and f-- words made me feel violated as I have admired him so much. His journey has not been easy, but demonstrating gratefulness and thankfulness for God's healing power are not appropriately shown from the use of unbecoming and unacceptable language.
