Washington Psa To Air In America Tonight
ISAIAH WASHINGTON will appear in a public service announcement intended to combat intolerance based on sexual orientation, race and gender during two back-to-back episodes of U.S. TV drama GREY'S ANATOMY tonight (24May07).
The actor, who plays Dr. Burke on the show, agreed to front the new PSA during a meeting with gay community leaders in Los Angeles, where he apologised for his use of an anti-gay sentiment on the set of the drama and again backstage at the Golden Globe Awards earlier this year (07).
Washington has already publicly apologised for his use of the word 'faggot,' which he first used to describe gay castmate T.R. Knight in a fight on set, and the actor has undergone counselling in a bid to get to grips with his apparent anti-gay thinking.
A spokesman for Los Angeles' Gay + Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), says, "He acknowledged the harm he had caused by his use of the epithet and expressed an interest in taking steps, such as appearing in this PSA, to combat prejudice and intolerance faced by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community."
Tonight's PSA was produced by ABC. Bosses at the network condemned Washington for his comments in a press release in January (07).
As part of the hard-hitting TV ad, the actor says, "Words have power. The power to express love, happiness and joy. They also have the power to heal. When you use words that demean a person because of their sexual orientation, race or gender, you send a message of hate. A very powerful message.
"We all have the power to demand better from one another and from ourselves. We have the power to heal and change the world by the words we use."
