Warhol's Mao Portrait Sets New Record
Andy Warhol's iconic portrait of late Chinese leader MAO ZEDONG sold for $17.36 million (GBP9.19 million) at auction in New York yesterday (15NOV06), setting a record for the artist's work.
The late pop art creator's portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy fetched $16.2 million (GBP9 million) and $15.6 million (GBP8.7 million) respectively at Christie's auction house.
The Mao Zedong portrait was sold by the Swiss-based Daros Collection to Hong Kong art collector JOSEPH LAU.
