Wall Street Journal Shoots Down Reports Of An Intel Tv

Even as reports continued to proliferate that Intel plans to unveil a "smart TV at the Consumer Electronics Show next week that would allow users to pay for only the broadcast and cable programs they wish to watch -- and watch them at any time -- the Wall Street Journal is throwing cold water on the predictions. In a report today (Wednesday), the Journal, which was the first to report on the expected cloud-based device, said that Intel's efforts to develop it have hit a snag -- largely due to its inability to reach content-licensing deals with the companies that own the major TV channels. The Journal's sources are now saying that Intel may not be able to launch the device until mid-2013 or even late in the year. As of now only one unidentified content producer has signed a deal with Inte, the Journal reported; another entertainment company executive said that if Intel wanted to license individual channels it would have to pay far higher fees than what cable operators presently pay for bundled packages. Another executive worried that signing a deal with Intel would disrupt his relationship with existing distributors.
