Van Dyk: 'Madonna's Comments Were Stupid'
The Material Girl made a surprise appearance at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami, Florida last weekend (24Mar12), and footage from the event showed Madonna using the word 'molly' - a slang term for Mdma, the chemical name for ecstasy - while addressing fans at the dance extravaganza.
Producer Deadmau5 was quick to take Madonna to task for what he thought was a reference to the drug, but she has since clarified her comments, insisting she was actually talking about a song called Have You Seen Molly?
Reaching out to Deadmau5 via Twitter.com, she wrote, "I don't support drug use and I never have. I was referring to the song called 'Have You Seen Molly' written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my last album..."
The explanation was enough to put an end to that feud, but superstar DJ Van Dyk isn't convinced - and he claims her "molly" reference simply reinforces negative stereotypes about electronic music.
He tells Billboard.com, "I don't think she was thinking much. The only thing she was probably thinking was, 'I need to connect with a young crowd,' and she made the biggest mistake of her career. Madonna was so stupid to actually call out drug abuse in front of a crowd of 18-year-olds. This is not what our music is about. It's really counterproductive."
