Us Football Star Williams Murdered
American football star DARRENT WILLIAMS was killed in a drive-by shooting in the early hours of New Year's Day (01JAN07) in Denver, Colorado.
The 24-year-old Denver Broncos starting cornerback had just left a nightclub - known as both Safari and Shelter - following a dispute which police say was purely verbal and didn't appear to directly involve Williams.
Around 2am, a white car pulled alongside Williams' hired white stretch Hummer and sprayed the limousine with bullets, hitting three people including Williams.
The two wounded by the gunfire, BRANDON FLOWERS and NICOLE REINDL, were taken to the nearby St Anthony Central Hospital.
Police have no motive for the shooting, which happened just hours after the Broncos were knocked out of the Super Bowl play-offs by the San Francisco 49ers.
Broncos owner PAT BOWLEN said in a statement: "All of us are devastated by this tragedy.
"To lose a young player, and more important, a great young man such as Darrent Williams, is incomprehensible. To lose him in such a senseless manner as this is beyond words."
