Univision To Enter Cable Biz -- With Three Networks
Spanish language Univision, which already is giving the four major broadcast networks a run for the money with some of its telenovelas (limited-run primetime soap operas), says it plans to launch three new cable networks in 2012. One will be devoted to sports -- principally soccer -- another to news and information; and a third to telenovelas that will air during the day. The network already attracts 70 percent of the total number of Hispanic viewers, with NBC's Telemundo capturing most of the rest. "The recent census findings have been waking up a lot of our competitors, and advertisers, to the power and the organic growth of the Hispanic marketplace," Randy Falco, Univision's chief operating officer, said in an interview with today's (Thursday) Los Angeles Times . "We are actually at a tipping point where advertisers cannot ignore this market any longer."
