Steven Tyler - Tyler: 'I'm What Makes Aerosmith Great'

Steven Tyler insists his meanness and his commitment to excellence have made Aerosmith the rock legends they are toady.
In a hard-hitting new TV interview, which will air on news show 60 Minutes on Sunday (11Mar12), the rocker-turned-American Idol judge admits he has been cruel to his bandmates at times - but his quest for perfection has helped them all become millionaire hitmakers.
When newswoman Lara Logan tells the singer what his bandmates said about him behind his back, Tyler accepts their criticisms, but adds, "I'm going to be big-headed right now, OK?. I think my perfectionism and my busting everyone's chops is what got this band to where it is today. In the end, I get a really good song and in the end, I get the hits. Yeah, I'm that good."
Bandmate Brad Whitford told Logan that Tyler can be "extremely demanding", while Tom Hamilton characterised the frontman as "unspeakably cruel".
The singer responded, "You're 100 per cent right. I've said many things to all those guys that I should never have said, that I didn't mean."
The drama within the band split them apart in late 2009 when Tyler announced he would be taking time off to pursue a solo career and his bandmates chose to continue without him.
After a brief rehab spell, the frontman rejoined the band and they're now about to embark on their first major tour since the bust-up, once the current season of American Idol is complete.
And it's clear from the 60 Minutes interview that his bandmates still have a lot of respect for Tyler.
Joey Kramer says, "When you ask what makes the band great, I think that it's a combination of all of us, Steven making it greater," and then adds, "(It) takes somebody so over the top and in our case with our lead singer, Steven Tyler, who's this amazingly gifted musician."
